Bombs Away is the twenty-fifth level of Donkey Kong Country Returns, as well as the third level of the Cave (Donkey Kong Country Returns). Again, the apes must ride Minecarts to proceed. However, unlike the previous two levels, Rickety Rails and Grip & Trip, the Kongs jump with the Minecart instead of jump out of it. Therefore, they must stay in the same cart for the entire level. This level features a great amount of crystals that stick out from the top of the cave. They are not very high above the track so they primates must make sure they do not jump too high, or else they will hit the crystals and lose an Extra Life Balloon. Sometimes the crystals are so low, the apes have to duck into the Minecart to avoid them. In some parts of the level, some of the crystals lower themselves toward the apes as they ride. However, the main obstacle in this level, and what gives the level its name is the Mole Guard who rides in a larger Minecart in the background. It throws bombs on the apes side of the track, creating gaps for them to jump over. The Mole Guard also throws bombs at the ceiling, causing crystals to fall and break part of the track. Near the end of the level, the Mole Guard throws a giant bomb that breaks a great part of the track. Near the end of the level, a ring will break apart from the track and the Kongs will have to ride inside it. Like with all other Minecart levels, the apes must time their jumps, for if they jump too early or too late, they can fall in a gap and lose an Extra Life Balloon. According to what I, Smashbro8, think, ducking the whole level is a good way to progress through the level. Other enemies in this level other than the Mole Guard, are Mole Miners. In Time Attack mode, a time of 1:45:00 is needed to get a gold medal, a time of 1:49:00 for a silver medal, and a time of 1:52:00 for a bronze medal.
OverviewThe level begins with the Kongs landing on a floor with a higher wooden part of floor ahead of the apes. There is also a wooden opening behind the Kongs. If the Kongs go through it, they can enter a small room with 9 Banana Bunches in three rows above the apes. The primates can then head out the room and jump on the higher part of floor. Here, they can see an awaiting Minecart on its track. When the apes land into it, it begins to move (remember that you jump with the Minecart, not out of the Minecart). The Minecart goes down a slanted slope, allowing the apes to collect a trail of Bananas. The Minecart soon approaches a small gap where another very small track can be found. The Kongs can jump here, however, they must jump as soon as they land here, to collect a trail of Bananas and the letter K of the K-O-N-G Letters and land on another track. The cart takes the apes up a small hill where they will soon approach a medium-sized gap with a Banana Bunch over it. The Kongs can jump to another track. Here, they will pass a yellow sign making a sound with two flashing lights (you know how a school bus' yellow lights move side to side whent they are turned on? That's what the lights on the sign do and look like, however, the lights move at a faster pace than the school bus' lights) warning the Kongs to duck. The Kongs approach a group of very low crystals, which they must duck to avoid hitting. The apes soon approach a gap which they must jump over to land on another track. While ducking, the apes can jump onto another track. Shortly after landing here, they will see a higher track above them and a Mole Miner in its Minecart approaches the apes on the same track they are on. This gives you a hint. What, what is it? The apes can jump on the Mole Miner and high bounce on it to get to the higher track. Up here, the Kongs can collect a trail of Bananas and jump over a small gap to land on a small track with a Puzzle Piece on it. After landing here and collecting the Piece, the apes can then jump to another track. However, if the apes did not bounce on the Mole Miner in its Minecart and continued going on their track, they will pass another Mole Miner in its Minecart as soon as they go under the gap the apes must jump over to get to the small track with the Puzzle Piece. Then after this, the Kongs can jump to the other track they would've also jumped on if they took the upper route. Here, the Kongs have to jump to another platform shortly, however, there are low crystals that if the Kongs jump too high, they will crash into and lose an Extra Life Balloon. Here, the apes should do a low jump (lightly tap the jump button on the Wii Remote) and land onto the next track, which is slightly higher. The Minecart soon takes the Kongs to a slope with a trail of Bananas on it, however, there are some very low crystals here, as well as a gap at the end of the last Banana. The Kongs must duck while the Minecart goes down this slope and then jump to land on the next track. Here, the crystals above the Kongs lower a bit and the apes will approach a weird-shaped roadblock with construction markings on it. They must carefully jump over this (it's best to do a low jump to avoid losing an Extra Life Balloon. After passing this roadblock, some of the crystals above the apes lower a little lower than the previous crystals, and the primates approach a smaller roadblock with construction markings on it. The Kongs should use a low jump to get over this safely. However, immediately after the apes get over the roadblock and land on the track, some crystals fall really low (the apes must duck to avoid this) ahead of them. The Kongs should duck to pass here safely. At the very end of this group of low crystals is the letter O, which the Kongs must quickly low jump to obtain. However, the apes should be careful while collecting the letter, for a gap is directly after this letter. Anyway, they can jump to another track. Here, the apes will approach a track with a smaller track beneath it holding a Puzzle Piece. If the Kongs want to get to the smaller track with the Puzzle Piece, they must perform a low jump to get there, then jump up to the above track. Anyway, regardless of the route, the apes will end up going down a curved slope where they can find a gap with a very small platform on it. The Kong's should jump shortly after the slope comes back to straight (the track straightens back after the slope) to land on the small platform and then from that platform jump again over a gap (the gap has a trail of Bananas and a Banana Coin in a curved shape above it) and land on another track. A Mole Guard appears in a much larger Minecart closer in the foreground. After a while, it throws a bomb onto the Kong's track, creating a gap for the apes to jump over. The apes should carefully jump over this and continue. As soon as the apes land back on their track, the enemy throws another bomb on the track. The apes should jump over this second gap created by the bomb. The apes will pass a Mole Miner in its Minecart heading towards them and a Banana Bunch high in the air, that can be reached if the primates high bounce on the Mole Miner. Anyway, the Mole Guard, now throws five or six bombs at the ceiling. This destroys some crystals on the ceiling in the background and also causes a large falling crystal to break part of the track, creating a gap the apes must jump over. As soon as the apes jump over this gap, another large falling crystal breaks part of the track, creating another gap the apes must jump over. On the next track, a third large falling crystal breaks part of the track, creating a third, crystal-created gap the heroes must jump over. OK, before the apes jump to the next track (pause the game at this point if you are playing), there are two routes the apes can take. The apes can jump to the next track with another yellow sign warning the apes to duck, for there are more low crystals ahead. The second route is the Kongs can not jump at all and fall to a lower track with a trail of Bananas on it. Here, the apes can jump over a gap and land onto another track with a trail of Bananas. The track goes up a small hill, and ends with a Puzzle Puzzle at its very end. Immediately after collecting the Puzzle Piece, the apes should jump to the above track to save themselves. One way or the other, the apes will end up at the same place. By the way, the apes will pass a Mole Miner in a Minecart right before the Puzzle Piece heading towards the apes. Also, the lower route lets the Kongs avoid ducking. Anyway, shortly after the Mole Miner, there is a crystal wall with small crystals sticking out a little above the track. There is a gap immediately after this crystal wall. So, the apes must duck to avoid the wall's crystals and jump to land on the next track. Here, another crystal wall swiftly lowers itself, forcing the Kong's to duck again and jump over the gap directly after it. The Kong's should land on the next track where they will pass the Tutorial Pig hosting the checkpoint on a wooden platform and another track next to the checkpoint's platform. There is nothing to worry about the platform next to the checkpoint's platform, for that is just the platform that holds the Minecart if you die anywhere after the checkpoint. Anyway, after a while, the apes will head under some crystals where a thin crystal piece lowers itself. Now, just because its thin doesn't mean you don't die if you collide into it!! So, with that being said, the apes should duck to avoid this. A Mole Miner nears the apes in its Minecart. The Kongs should jump over this enemy and make sure they do not land on it, otherwise they will crash into a crystal wall in the air. This crystal wall does not lower, but a thin piece of crystals does right beside the crystal wall. There is a gap not too long after this thin crystal piece. The apes should duck to avoid touching the thin crystal piece and then jump onto the next track. Here three thin crystal pieces lower themselves. The Kongs should duck to avoid touching the crystals, however, they can raise their heads after the third crystal piece to collect a trail of Bananas slightly above them. There is a Puzzle Piece at the end of the trail, however, a thin crystal piece lowers itself directly after it, so the apes must duck immediately after they collect the Puzzle Piece. After they duck, the primates should jump to land on another track. Here there is a trail of Bananas as well as five Mole Miners heading the same direction as the Kongs at a slower pace in front of the apes. The Kongs can jump on all five of them to get rid of them, however, if they high bounce on the second-to-last one, they can grab the letter N high in the air. The Kongs can then jump over a gap to land on another track. Here, the Mole Guard reappears in the foreground. It throws a bomb at the track, creating a gap for the Kongs to jump over. Once the duo are going over the gap, the Mole Guard throws another bomb on the Kong's track. Once the Kong's jump over the gap created by the bomb and land on the next track, the Mole Guard throws three bombs on the track rapidly. Here, the player should time his jumps carefully. Now, the apes must jump over a gap onto a small platform, then from there, jump over another gap to another small platform. From here, the apes can jump onto another track, where the Mole Guard hits a roadblock, flies over a gap, and lands in another Minecart. The apes will pass another yellow sign warning the Kongs to duck right before the Mole Guard lands in the Minecart. The Kongs should duck to avoid touching a group of low crystals while collecting a trail of Bananas. As soon as the apes pass the low crystals, the Mole Guard pulls out a TREMENDOUS bomb. However, the enemy hits a roadblock, causing the large bomb to fly away and break a large portion of the Kongs' track. The Kongs will near a large gap which they must jump over. They will land on another track, hopefully, and then low jump onto a third track to avoid touching some crystals. The Kongs will continue riding forward to ride onto a track that really belongs to a wheel-shaped ring. When the Kongs get onto the ring's track, the wheel-shaped ring begins to move. This ring has a large gap in it, that the Kongs must jump over as the ring rolls over a large group of crystals, destroying the ones in its path. At the first time jumping over the gap, the Kongs can grab the letter G. Hopefully, they land back on the track, where they continue to jump over the ring's gap as it moves down the slope of crystals. As the apes get closer to the end, the ring destroys more crystals. Soon, the ring gets held back and the Kongs are thrown onto a bumpy track. The apes land on another bumpy track before they are thrown onto a floor with the Slot Machine Barrel above it. There is also an entrance to a Bonus Room if the apes ignore the Slot Machine Barrel and continue heading forward. Anyway, when the Slot Machine Barrel is hit, the level is complete.
- K: The letter K is above the second gap in the level after the Kongs get in the Minecart.
- O: In the area where the duo ride under a long ceiling of crystals, they come up to a lower area of crystals. The letter O is immediately before a gap on the other side of these crystals and can be obtained if they lift their head up, however, they must be careful not to hit the crystals.
- N: Near the end of the level, the Kongs near a group of five Mole Miners moving in their Minecarts the same direction as the Kongs at a slower pace. If the Kongs high bounce on the second-to-last Mole Miner, they can reach the letter N, high in the air.
- G: As soon as the heroes get into the wheel-shaped ring, at the first gap, they can jump over it to collect the letter K.
- If the Kongs perform a high bounce on the first Mole Miner of the level, they can reach a higher track. Here, they can jump over a gap onto a small track with the first Puzzle Piece.
- The second Puzzle Piece is shortly after the letter O. They can reach this track by making a low jump at the second jump from the letter O.
- In the area of the level where the duo must avoid large crystals that fall and put gaps in the track, the apes can notice a Banana floating at the bottom of the screen in the third gap. If they fall to this Banana they land on a separate track which leads to the Puzzle Piece. However, the apes still have to jump over some gaps to get to the Puzzle Piece.
- Near the end of the level just before the letter N, the apes find themselves crouching underneath some crystals, where they will come across a trail of Bananas. The Kongs can lift their heads up. There is a Puzzle Piece at the end of the Banana trail. However, a thin crystal lowers itself directly after the Puzzle Piece, so the Kongs must duck immediately after they collect the piece to avoid losing an Extra Life Balloon.
- On the floor with the Slot Machine Barrel above it, the apes can ignore the Barrel and continue moving forward to enter a Bonus Room. Here, the apes must collect seventy-eight Bananas and two Banana Coins while navigating around several stationary platforms. If everything is collected within a time limit of thirty seconds, the Puzzle Piece is theirs.
