The heroes stand on a swinging, wooden platform with spikes on its sides in Clifftop Climb. An entrance to a Bonus Room is right to the far left of the Kongs, right where that wooden structure on the rock floor is.

Clifftop Climb is the forty-fifth level of Donkey Kong Country Returns, as well as the eighth level of the Cliff. The level involves the Kongs (Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong) climbing a high clifftop by using Barrel Cannons and Auto-Fire Barrels, most of which are skull ones (skull Barrel Cannons/Auto-Fire Barrels explode/destroy themselves, whatever you want to call it, after firing the Kongs), springs, and fragile platforms that can crumble and fall (there are two types of these platforms: crumbling, wooden platforms that crumble when stepped on, and cracked, wooden, brown rocks that instead of being pounded on, can only hold the Kongs for a certain time before they crumble into pieces). The Kongs also encounter many swinging, wooden platforms attached to ropes, and they have spikes on their sides (as seen in the picture above). These platforms can be used as platforms to stand on, and they are safe platforms too. While most of the Barrel Cannons in this level are stationary, some of the ones near the end of the level move from left to right. Also, the obstacles in this level force the Kongs to continue moving and not to turn back, unless they want to fall and lose an Extra Life Balloon. This means instead of falling down to a previous area after falling off a platform, etc, the heroes will, instead, fall into a gap and die. Also, throughout the level, Thugly's Highrise can be seen in the background. Enemies in this level include Skellyrexes, Tiki Zings, and Tiki Buzzes. Also, another thing, just like Tippy Shippy, the weather is different from that of the levels before Tippy Shippy, which are Sticky Situation, Prehistoric Path, Weighty Way, Boulder Roller (even though this level is more inside than outside, there is a large hole at the beginning in the background, and the Kongs can see cloudy, overcast weather in it), Precarious Plateau and Crumble Canyon. Anyway, the background is taken in a beautiful, sunny morning at dawn, however, according to what I, Smashbro8, think about it, it seems to be much prettier in this level than in Tippy Shippy. This is probably either because of the stuff in the background, or probably that the Sun is shining a bit brighter in this level than in Tippy Shippy. Anyway, in Time Attack mode, a time of 1:19:00 is needed to get a gold medal, a time of 1:33:00 for a silver medal, and a time of 1:50:00 for a bronze medal.

Overview

Clifftop Climb 1

The Kongs have pounded the giant, flat, golden switch three times, which caused three dinosaur skeletons to come out of the lake of tar. The first two hold Banana Coins, and the middle one holds a Puzzle Piece, which is (in the picture) moving towards the collected Puzzle Piece part (which is to the top left of the screen). Look at that lake of tar!

The level begins with the Kongs landing on a floor attached to a wooden bridge, whose end can be seen ahead. There are two, propeller-like plants that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely. The heroes can head to the end of this wooden bridge, The first thing they will see is a giant, golden switch (the flat, trampoline-like version that, most of the time, takes three pounds to work, not the big, fat version that has to be pounded into the ground) over a lake of tar. The heroes can jump onto this giant, golden switch. A rock floor with a DK Barrel, two Skellyrexes, and two propeller-like plants, the second being bigger than the other, that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely, is after this golden switch. BUT!!! If this golden switch is pounded, a dinosaur skeleton with its mouth opens, comes out of the tar, and a Banana Coin appears in its mouth, which can be stood on. The heroes should give this golden switch another pound. Another dinosaur skeleton with its mouth open appears to the right of this first one, and it is slightly higher than it. A Banana Coin appears in its mouth. Another pound on this switch, causes the loud noise to come out, meaning the switch is done doing its job, a dinosaur skeleton appears in between these two previous dinosaur skeletons, and it is the highest of them all. Also, it holds a Puzzle Piece inside its mouth. So, to get here, from the switch, the heroes should jump to the first dinosaur skeleton. From here, the heroes should jump to the dinosaur-skeleton to the right. Now, from here, the Kongs can jump to the dinosaur skeleton in the middle that holds the Puzzle Piece. After the Puzzle Piece has been collected, the heroes can jump on the floor with the two Skellyrexes, DK Barrel, etc. At the end of this floor, there is a skull Barrel Cannon above the gap after this floor. The heroes can jump into this skull Barrel Cannon. BUT!!! There is a hidden Banana Bunch underneath this Barrel Cannon in the gap. If the heroes drop into the gap underneath the Barrel Cannon, they can land into a hidden Auto-Fire Barrel (or skull Auto-Fire Barrel) that can fire them into a Bonus Room. Anyway, the Barrel Cannon can fire the Kongs onto a spring on a large, cracked, brown, rock. Now, these are types you see in other levels that take three pounds to break, these large, cracked brown rocks in Clifftop Climb instead can only hold the Kongs for a certain time before crumbling. The ones attached to springs, break off at the same time when the Kongs bounce off it for the third time. Anyway, the heroes can bounce and head right to land on a crumbling, wooden platform. From here, the heroes can jump up to a smaller crumbling, wooden platform slightly to the left of them above them. Now on this platform, the heroes can quickly jump on the next crumbling, wooden platform where they can find a skull Barrel Cannon in the gap next to it. The heroes can jump into this skull Barrel Cannon quickly before the crumbling, wooden platform carries the apes into the abyss below. The heroes can then fire and move right to land on a floor made up of two, cracked, brown, rocks with a trail of four Bananas and a Skellyrex on it. A Heart is above this floor of two, large, cracked, brown rocks. There is a gap with a Tiki Buzz in it after this, and a spring on a large, cracked, brown, rock is after it. The heroes can quickly travel over the floor, jump over the gap (you can still wait when it is safe, for the platforms' cracks get bigger twice before they break, however, just make sure you don't end up falling into the abyss!), and land on this spring. On the spring, the heroes can then bounce to a small crumbling, wooden platform that holds the letter K of the K-O-N-G Letters. Here, they can quickly jump into a skull Barrel Cannon to the left of them before the crumbling platform destroys itself and carries the Kongs along into the gap below. The skull Barrel Cannon fires the Kongs upward to the left diagonally into a skull Auto-Fire Barrel. The skull Auto-Fire Barrel then fires the apes up onto a crumbling, wooden platform. The heroes are now in a maze of platforms. They can either head left or right. If the apes head left, climb up the crumbling, wooden platforms, and bounce on a spring, and head left, they can reach a small floor holding a cactus that can be pounded on for a Puzzle Piece. They can then bounce onto a spring and head right to enter a skull Barrel Cannon. Anyway, if the Kongs head right, they can jump onto a spring. Here, they can quickly bounce up and head slightly to the right to land on a crumbling wooden platform above the spring slightly to the right. This crumbling, wooden platform holds a Banana Bunch on it. After the crumbling, wooden platform, the Kongs can jump into a skull Barrel Cannon above it slightly to the right. The apes can then fire through a trail of Bananas straight up to a skull Auto-Fire Barrel. The skull Auto-Fire Barrel automatically fires the heroes up to the left diagonally into another skull Auto-Fire Barrel. This skull Auto-Fire Barrel then fires the Kongs through a trail of Bananas, straight up to a normal, wooden platform holding the Tutorial Pig, who hosts the first checkpoint. Also, the skull Barrel Cannon that was on the left route, could still bring the Kongs up here. So, both skull Barrel Cannons before this can bring the heroes to the same location. Anyway, there is a crumbling, wooden platform to the left of the Kongs that holds a DK Barrel, as well as another, smaller one to the right of them with a skull Barrel Cannon after it. Note that if the Kongs want to use the DK Barrel, they must grab it and immediately jump back onto the platform holding the first checkpoint, for if they don't they will fall and lose an Extra Life Balloon. Anyway, the heroes can go ahead and jump on this small crumbling, wooden platform to the right of them. Here, the Kongs can then, quickly, jump into the skull Barrel Cannon to the right of them. This fires the apes to the up to the right diagonally into a skull Auto-Fire Barrel. The skull Auto-Fire Barrel then fires the Kongs onto a crumbling, wooden platform. Two strange, swinging, wooden platforms with spikes on their sides are attached to a rope in a rock. They swing back and forth ahead of the Kongs, and they each hold a Banana Bunch. The letter O is in the air between them. A skull Barrel Cannon with a trail of Bananas above it is after these swinging, wooden platforms. So, quickly, the heroes should jump on the first swinging, wooden platform when it gets near. Here, they can go ahead and jump and hover through the letter O, onto the second swinging, wooden platform (just an easy way to collect the letter O in such a dangerous area!). From this second, swinging platform, the heroes can then jump into the skull Barrel Cannon to the left of them. That wasn't all that bad, was it. But it gets harder, so don't think it's all good!! It's gonna get worse sooner or later!!! Anyway, in this skull Barrel Cannon, the heroes can fire upwards through a trail of Bananas into a skull Auto-Fire Barrel, which then fires the Kongs onto a crumbling, wooden platform. There is another, smaller, crumbling, wooden platform above the Kongs slightly to the left that holds a Banana Bunch on it. Also, a skull Barrel Cannon is above it. The Kongs can jump here. Here, they can jump into the skull Barrel Cannon which can then fire them onto another small crumbling, wooden platform if they move right. Here, the Kongs are now in a new area. There are two swinging, wooden platforms with spikes on their sides, the first holds a Banana Bunch on it and the second holds a Heart. A skull Barrel Cannon is underneath each one of the spiked, swinging, wooden platforms, the second having a Banana Coin above it. On this small crumbling, wooden platform, the heroes can go ahead and jump into this skull Barrel Cannon. Here in this skull Barrel Cannon, the Kongs can carefully fire onto the first spiked, swinging, wooden platform. On this swinging platform, the heroes can either roll-jump/jump and hover to an opening to the left of them that leads into a Bonus Room or carefully jump into the second skull Barrel Cannon when the second swinging, spiked, wooden platform is not nearing them. Now in this skull Barrel Cannon, the heroes can carefully fire onto the second swinging, spiked, wooden platform when it gets near. On top of this second swinging, spiked, wooden platform, the heroes can jump into a skull Barrel Cannon to the right of them that has a trail of five Bananas above it. Here in this skull Barrel Cannon, the Kongs can fire straight up into another skull Barrel Cannon. In this next skull Barrel Cannon, the apes can fire up to the left diagonally into a skull Auto-Fire Barrel. The skull Auto-Fire Barrel in turn fires the Kongs can fire and move right to land on a spring attached to a large, cracked, brown rock. Here, the Kongs can bounce up to a small crumbling, wooden platform. On this small crumbling, wooden platform, the heroes can jump onto a floor made up of four cracked, brown rocks attached to each other. A trail of eight Bananas is on this floor, as well as a Skellyrex. Also, about half of a large, swinging, wooden platform with spikes on its side can be seen swinging above the Kongs on this floor. The letter N swings along with this large, swinging, spiked, wooden platform, right underneath its base. However, since the large, swinging, spiked, wooden platform's base is covered in spikes,
ClifftopClimb165-1-

The heroes jump into a Barrel Cannon after the floor made up of four large, cracked, brown rocks that has a large, swinging, spiked, wooden platform above it. This is just after the letter N. By the way, that enemy is not a Skullyrex; it is instead a Skellyrex that has lost its body.

the heroes should not jump too high to collect the letter, otherwise they will touch the spikes and lose a Heart. Anyway, after the left edge of this floor made up of four large, cracked, brown rocks, there is another spring attached to a large, cracked, brown rock in the gap after the floor. The heroes can jump onto this spring and bounce up into a normal (regular) Barrel Cannon. In this Barrel Cannon, the heroes can fire straight up to a normal, wooden platform attached to a strange orange/light brown rock platform that holds a Banana Bunch on it. Here, on this normal, wooden platform, the Kongs can move onto the strange orange/light brown rock. Here, they can find a gap with the same large, swinging, spiked, wooden platform swinging in it. A skull Barrel Cannon with a trail of Bananas above it is just after this large, swinging, spiked, wooden platform. However, all of this large, swinging, spiked, wooden platform can be seen, and a Banana Coin is above its top. When the platform swings nearby, the Kongs can go ahead and jump on top of it. Here, the heroes can then jump into the skull Barrel Cannon when they get close to it. The skull Barrel Cannon fire the apes straight up (which also makes the large, swinging, spiked, wooden platform fall into the abyss below) into a skull Auto-Fire Barrel. The skull Auto-Fire Barrel fires the Kongs up to the left (not diagonally) onto a normal, wooden platform that holds the Tutorial Pig hosting the second checkpoint. After the checkpoint, the Kongs can jump into a skull Barrel Cannon right after it to the left. The skull Barrel Cannon fires the Kongs up to left diagonally into a skull Auto-Fire Barrel, which in turn, fires the Kong straight up onto a small crumbling, wooden platform. Here, the apes can then jump up to another small, crumbling, wooden platform above them slightly to the left. On this second small, crumbling, wooden platform, the heroes can jump over a gap with a Tiki Buzz in it and land on a spring attached to a cracked, brown rock. Here on this spring attached to a large, cracked, brown rock, the heroes can find a skull Barrel Cannon moving left to right on a line in the wall in the background. With good timing, the heroes can bounce up only to be caught by the skull Barrel Cannon. Now the skull Barrel Cannon points up and continues to move left and right on a line. A floor made up of three large, cracked, brown rocks that holds a Skellyrex on it is high above the skull Barrel Cannon. To the left of this floor of three large, cracked, brown rocks, there is a separate large, cracked, brown rock that holds a DK Barrel on it. The heroes must fire through the space between the floor and the separate large, cracked, brown rock, where they can either move right or left to land on the one wished to be landed onto. Also, an Extra Life Balloon is in the large space between the skull Barrel Cannon and the floor/separate platform.
Clifftop Climb 2

The heroes are in the skull Barrel Cannon with the floor of three large, cracked, brown rocks with the Skellyrex on it above it, as well as a separate cracked, brown rock with a DK Barrel on them. Also, an Extra Life Balloon is in the large space between these two.

With good timing, the heroes can fire up and move left to land on the large, cracked, brown rock with the DK Barrel on it, or move right to land on the floor with the Skellyrex on it. If they choose to go onto the large, cracked, brown rock, they can then jump over the space between it and the floor to land on the floor. A skull Barrel Cannon is above the gap after this floor, and it moves left and right, like the previous. However, unlike the previous skull Barrel Cannon, its opening is pointing to face the Kongs, so that it can catch them. With good timing, and watching out for the crumbling floor, the Kongs can jump into this next skull Barrel Cannon. This skull Barrel Cannon now points up, however, it continues to move left and right. Now, the objective for the Kongs is to fire up onto a floor made up of two large cracked, brown rocks that has a Skellyrex on it. With good timing, the Kongs can go ahead and fire up to this floor, however they must move left to land here. Here, on this floor, there is a skull Barrel Cannon moving back and forth along a line in the wall in the background after this floor's left edge. The Kongs must wait for this skull Barrel Cannon to get within range to jump into it, however, they must also watch out for the floor which is cracking beneath them. With good timing, the heroes can go ahead and jump into this skull Barrel Cannon. This skull Barrel Cannon, after catching the Kongs, points up, where the Kongs have to fire up into another skull Barrel Cannon. However, this skull Barrel Cannon is to the left of them high above them. So, the Kongs have to time this fire, and they have to move left to catch it too. However, the best time to fire is when the next skull Barrel Cannon is on its very right side, and the skull Barrel Cannon with the Kongs in it is in its very left. So, with good timing, the heroes should fire and move left. Most likely, if done correctly, the skull Barrel Cannon should catch them. Now the skull Barrel Cannon points up, however, the objective is not as hard as the previous. All the Kongs must do is fire and move left to land on a spring attached to a large, cracked, brown rock. When this has been done (the Kongs should be on the spring), the heroes can bounce up and move to the right to land on a small, crumbling, wooden, platform with a Banana on it. Here, the Kongs can carefully jump over a gap with a Tiki Buzz to land on another smaller crumbling, wooden platform that holds a Banana Bunch. Here, the Kongs can jump onto another small, crumbling, wooden platform above them slightly to the right. On this next small, crumbling, wooden platform, the Kongs can jump onto a spring attached to a large, cracked, brown platform. Here, the Kongs can bounce up to a moving skull Barrel Cannon that moves left to right on its line. When the apes enter this skull Barrel Cannon, it points up and continues to move left to right. The Kongs must now fire up and move left to land on a small, crumbling, wooden platform. BUT! The letter G is to the right of this small, crumbling, wooden platform. So, with good timing, the Kongs can fire up when the skull Barrel Cannon is underneath the letter G to reach the letter. They can also move left during this to land on this small, crumbling, wooden platform. Here, the apes can carefully jump over a gap with a Tiki Buzz only to land on a small, crumbling, wooden platform with a Heart on it. Here, the apes can jump onto another small, crumbling, wooden platform above them slightly to the left that holds a Banana on it. A skull Barrel Cannon is above this, and it moves left to right on its line attached to the wall in the background. However, because this small, crumbling, wooden platform with the Banana on it is crumbling, the Kongs have no choice but to jump and hover into this skull Barrel Cannon (unless they high bounce off the Tiki Buzz before this platform and hover to it). In this skull Barrel Cannon which now points up with the Kongs in it, the Kongs objective is to fire into another skull Barrel Cannon that moves left to right on its line attached to the

The Kongs poke their heads out of a skull Barrel Cannon just before they fire to another one moving on its line to the left of them.

wall in the background. This next skull Barrel Cannon is to the right of the Kongs, however, there is a point where the two skull Barrel Cannons meet each other. When this point comes, the Kongs can quickly fire into this next skull Barrel Cannon. In this next skull Barrel Cannon, the Kongs must now, once again, fire into another skull Barrel Cannon that moves along its line attached to the wall in the background, that is to the left. However, like the previous, there is a point where the two skull Barrel Cannons meet. So, at this point with good timing, the Kongs should fire into this next skull Barrel Cannon. Now, in this next skull Barrel Cannon the Kongs have two choices, they can either fire and move left to land onto a platform sticking out of a wall with a cactus that can be pounded on for a Puzzle Piece, or fire straight up into another skull Barrel Cannon. If the Kongs take the Puzzle Piece route, they can fire and move left, pound the cactus on the platform and collect the Puzzle Piece, then jump into the next skull Barrel Cannon. However, if the Kongs choose to ignore this platform with the cactus that holds the Puzzle Piece, they can fire straight up into the next skull Barrel Cannon. Either way, the Kongs end up in the same skull Barrel Cannon.
Clifftop Climb 4

The Kongs have now reached the top of the high clifftop where the Slot Machine Barrel lies. BUT!!! They must now fire through two groups of six moving Tiki Zings in order to reach it!

Here, they end up having to fire through two groups of six moving Tiki Zings that constantly touch each other and move away from each other. If the Kongs fire at the wrong time (when they are touching each other or going to touch each other), the Kongs are going to lose a Heart. Anyway, when the Tiki Zings are going to back away, the Kongs can fire straight up into the level's Slot Machine Barrel. Once this has been done, the level is complete!

Secrets

K-O-N-G Letters

  • K:
    ClifftopClimb265-1-

The Kongs fire into the letter G. Doesn't that blue stuff at the bottom left of the page look like water? Or is it water? If it is, dang I'm Smashbro8)dumb -_-!

Near the start of the level, the Kongs can find a Heart that they can use if they have lost one. Shortly after this right next to the nearest skull Barrel Cannon, there is the letter K on a crumbling, wooden platform that can be reached by bouncing to it off of a spring.
  • O: Between the two swinging, spiked, wooden, platforms shortly after the first checkpoint is the letter O. It can be reached if the heroes jump into it off of the first swinging, spiked, wooden platform and then land on the second swinging platform.
  • N: After the fourth Puzzle Piece, the Kongs will soon end up on a floor made up of four, cracked, brown rocks with a large, swinging, spiked, wooden platform. The letter N is under this large, spiked, swinging, wooden platform's base. It can easily be reached with a jump, however, the Kongs should not jump too high because this platform's base is covered in spikes that can hurt them.
  • G: As the heroes fire through the skull Barrel Cannons that move left to right along their lines and climb up from platform to platform, the heroes will end up in a skull Barrel Cannon that points up when landed in. The objective for the Kongs here is to fire and move left to a small, crumbling, wooden platform. BUT!!! The letter G is to the right of this small, crumbling, wooden platform. If the Kongs fire when the skull Barrel Cannon they're in is underneath the letter, they can fire into it and then move left to land on the small, crumbling, wooden platform.

Puzzle Pieces

  1. Clifftop Climb First Puzzle Piece

The Kongs jump to the first Puzzle Piece.

At the beginning of the level, there is a large, flat, golden switch that can be pounded on three times to cause three dinosaur skeletons to come out the lake of tar and spawn items. The left and right skeletons hold Banana Coins in their mouths, which can be stood on, while the middle on holds a Puzzle Piece. However, each skeleton is higher than the other. So, the right skeleton is higher than the left and the middle skeleton is the highest. If the Kongs jump onto the first skeleton, then onto the second skeleton, they can jump into the middle skeleton's mouth where the Puzzle Piece lies.
  2. Underneath the first skull Barrel Cannon ( which is also the first Barrel Cannon) there is a hidden Banana Bunch underneath it. If the Kongs drop through this Banana Bunch, they can land in a skull Auto-Fire Barrel (or Auto-Fire Barrel), which then fires them into a Bonus Room. Here, the Kongs must shoot between two Barrel Cannons to collect eighty Bananas and two Banana Coins, while trying to avoid an Auto-Fire Barrel moving up and down in the center of the room that can blast them out of there. If everything is collected within thirty seconds, a Puzzle Piece appears.
  3. When the Kongs reach the second skull Barrel Cannon (which is really a skull Auto-Fire Barrel) after the letter K, they can bounce on a spring just below it to reach a hidden platform with a cactus on it that can be pounded on for a Puzzle Piece.
  4. In the second area with two swinging, spiked, wooden platforms and two skull Barrel Cannons underneath them. When the Kongs reach the first swinging, spiked, wooden platform, they can roll-jump/jump and hover to the left to reach a ledge with an opening. This opening leads into a Bonus Room. Here, the Kongs must bounce on a moving trampoline to grab forty Bananas and four Banana Coins. If everything is collected within thirty seconds, a Puzzle Piece appears that the Kongs can bounce to.
  5. In the last skull Barrel Cannon before the skull Barrel Cannon that the Kongs must use to fire through two groups of moving Tiki Zings, the Kongs can fire and move left to land on a hidden ledge. The hidden ledge has a cactus that can be pounded on for a Puzzle Piece.
