Extra Life Balloons are items in Donkey Kong Country Returns. They are red balloons. Whenever Donkey Kong loses a life in single-player mode, he floats back to the start of the level or checkpoint by riding an Extra Life Balloon which pops at the start or checkpoint of the level, showing how many lives are consumed. In two-player mode, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong share extra lives. If either one of them dies, they will float back onscreen in a DK Barrel hanging from an Extra Life Balloon, very similar to how characters float in Bubbles in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. If both Kongs die at the same time, they will return to the start or at a checkpoint, although this costs the duo two lives. Extra Life Balloons are also sold in Cranky Kong's Shop in groups of one, three, and seven. By purchasing these balloons, the Kongs will receive that number of lives (it may be easier to describe in the Mario (series)' way, so for example, 1 Extra Life Balloon is a 1-Up, 5 Extra Life Balloons is a 5-Up and 7 Extra Life Balloons is a 7-Up). Even though these balloons are red, there are three balloons attached to the roof of Cranky Kong's Shop- one red, one blue, and one yellow. Extra Life Balloons are also found in Bonus Rooms and are required to collect, along with the other items in the room, to receive a Puzzle Piece as a reward.
