Gear Getaway is the fiftieth level of Donkey Kong Country Returns, as well as the fourth level of the Factory. Most of the level requires the use of the Rocket Barrel. As the Kongs (Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong) ride through this level, they must dodge all different types of deadly, frightening, machinery. The most common obstacle are the many rotating gears in this level. The gears range in size as the heroes progress. The level features gears from small, to large, to larger than large, to DOWNRIGHT PRODIGIOUS (huge, enormous, definition gotten from thesaurus.com)!!! The small and large ones appear at the beginning and continue to be seen as the Kongs proceed, however, the prodigious gears are seen at the end of the level. The heroes must dodge these gears' "teeth". Be careful for the small gears aren't really that small, they are more medium-sized! However, these aren't the only machinery in the level. The level also features obstacles made up of one piece of machinery below another one directly above it, which smash into each other in upward and downward directions (as seen in the picture above). The heroes must dodge these deadly obstacles by flying through their spaces. Also, there are some machinery made up similar to the smashing machinery, however, the machinery look different and they don't smash into each other. Instead, they move up and down close to one another, creating a small, narrow gap the Kongs must travel through with good timing and coordination. Sometimes this type of machinery is only made up of one piece of machinery that moves up and down constantly. The only enemies to appear in this level are Tiki Buzzes. Well, guess the machinery really is THAT scary. Anyway, in Time Attack mode, a time of 1:45:00 is needed to get a gold medal, a time of 1:55:00 is needed to get a silver medal, and a time of 2:00:00 is needed to get a gold medal.
OverviewThe level begins with the Kongs landing on a floor. There are two lamps above this floor. The first lamp can be jumped to for a collectible, most likely, while the second one can be jumped to, however it is a lot trickier to reach. Also, a DK Barrel is on this floor too. Behind the Kongs is a strange brick part of the wall that has a white target painted on it. If the heroes grab the DK Barrel, head to the brick wall, and then jump and throw the DK Barrel at the target, the bricks break, revealing an alcove the Kongs can jump into for the first Puzzle Piece of the level. The Kongs head to the floor, where they can find a large gap. Four small platforms move up and down constantly in this gap. There is a Tiki Buzz flying up and down between the first and second platforms, as well as one flying up and down between the third and fourth platforms. A trail of two Bananas in a vertical position with a Banana Bunch on top can be found over the second and third platforms. Anyway, the Kongs can jump on the first small platform moving up and down. Here, watching the Tiki Buzz, the heroes can carefully jump to the second small platform moving up and down. BUT!!! If the heroes jump backwards off the first platform moving up and down, they can hover to the second lamp, where a Puzzle Piece appears if it is hit. Here, the Kongs have two choices. They can either jump to the third small platform moving up and down, or drop down into a hidden Barrel Cannon that can fire them into a Bonus Room. Anyway, the Kongs can jump to the third platform moving up and down. Here, they can carefully jump over the second Tiki Buzz onto the fourth platform moving up and down. Here, ahead of the Kongs are a large group of smashing machinery (they look different from the ones in this page's first picture) that smash into each other and rise up one after another. So, when the first set of machinery rise up, the Kongs should jump here and quickly run (or roll) and jump until they reach the end of this area. Here, there is a gap with the Rocket Barrel in it. Quickly, the Kongs should jump into it before they get smashed by the smashing machinery. The Kongs should now activate the Rocket Barrel (press the 2 button repeatedly on the Wii Remote). After doing this a couple times, the Rocket Barrel heads up and turns right into the air, allowing the Kongs to now take control of it. Also, Gear Getaway's main theme (or should I, Smashbro8, say the Rocket Barrel's main theme) plays during this. Now the first thing the apes will pass is are two pairs of smashing machinery, one pair above the other, which can be seen as the apes activate the Rocket Barrel. While they were in the Rocket Barrel, they should've waited for the machinery to smash into each other and then activate the Barrel. This helps them to pass these two pairs of smashing machinery safely. After the smashing machinery, the apes will come up to a long trail of Bananas, which they can collect, leading to some rotating gears. If the Kongs collect everything in this trail of Bananas, as well as the Banana Coin at the end of the trail, they can collect a Puzzle Piece that appears ahead of them between some gears. After the Puzzle Piece, the Kongs must now carefully travel through the spaces between some more large and small gears. The heroes can continue until they get close to some larger gears which are way larger than the previous gears, yet they are not prodigious. The prodigious gears are 10x (times) larger than all of these gears. Anyway, these larger gears "teeth" do come to a point where they touch each other. So, with that being said, to avoid being caught in the area where both larger gears' "teeth" touch each other, the apes must carefully put themselves in the spaces between two "teeth" on both gears. Soon, the "teeth" of both gears will move away from each other, allowing the Kongs to get through here safely. However, the Kongs don't win much luck, for another pair of larger gears are directly after this. So, don't go dancing for joy because you got through this; wait till you reach the prodigious gears! Anyway, these gears' "teeth" once again do touch one another. So, once again, the Kongs must now travel through the spaces between two "teeth" of each gear to get through this safely. After the Kongs get past this, they must travel through the space between a larger gear and and a large gear (Remember: the gears that are called "larger" are larger than the ones called "large"). When the apes past this they will end up traveling through a large group of collectibles. This large group of collectibles is made up of Bananas and Banana Bunches, however, the letter K of the K-O-N-G Letters is near the top of the sixth (last) long row of collectibles in this group. The Kongs can easily move up to collect the letter. Anyway, immediately after the letter K is the Tutorial Pig hosting the checkpoint on a small platform. When the heroes pass the pig, the checkpoint is automatically activated. After the checkpoint has been activated, it won't be long before the apes travel through a quite large space between two small gears. Immediately after the heroes pass these two small gears, they will approach two pairs of four smashing machinery that move up when the Kongs near them. The heroes can carefully travel through them just before they smash back down to reach another pair of larger gears after these smashing machinery. Here, the apes can see a Puzzle Piece in a space between two "teeth" of the upper larger gear. If the Kongs carefully enter this space, they can collect the Puzzle Piece. Anyway, the Kongs should put themselves in a space between two "teeth" of both gears so that can safely get through this. After the heroes get through this space safely, they will reach another two pairs of four smashing machinery. However, the Kongs should notice the pattern of these smashing machinery. Each piece of machinery is a bit higher than the other, forming a "staircase" going upwards. The smashing machinery move up when the Kongs get near. Quickly, the heroes should go through the space between the smashing machinery, moving up a bit to get through this group of smashing machinery before it smashes them. After the Kongs pass this group of four smashing machinery, they will approach two small gears, which they must travel past by traveling through the space they create between them. After these two small gears, the heroes will approach two pairs of four smashing machinery almost identical to the previous, however, their direction is the opposite of the previous. This means, each piece of smashing machinery in these two pairs is a bit lower than the previous, forming a "staircase" going downwards. So, this machinery rises back up again after smashing when the Kongs near it. Carefully, the apes should head through the space between the smashing machinery, moving down a bit to navigate through it. They should be careful, for the smashing machinery is smashing after them. Anyway, after these two pairs of smashing machinery, the apes will end up flying over a small floor. There is a trail of six Bananas, ending with a Banana Bunch close to the floor, as well as an Extra Life Balloon a little higher than the trail of Bananas. After this, the heroes will near two pairs of two smashing machinery, with a slightly different look than the previous ones. The smashing machinery opens up, allowing the Kongs to go through it, however, they must be quick to get through this. After this has been passed, the apes can move up to the letter O above a small floor. After the letter O is a high pair of four smashing machinery, with the same exact look as the previous. If the heroes do not move upwards to where their space is created, they will crash into them and lose an Extra Life Balloon. So, with that being said, after the letter O, the Kongs should immediately move upwards some more to reach the space created by the smashing machinery. The smashing machinery opens up when the heroes get close. The Kongs can carefully go through the space created by these deadly machinery. Now, immediately, the heroes should move downwards so that they can go through a space created by a lower pair of two pieces of smashing machinery. So, the smashing machinery will open up when the Kongs get near, allowing the heroes to, once again, go through their space. Quickly, the heroes should head through their space. Now the Kongs will approach some more rotating gears (remember, every gear in this level rotates regardless if it says rotating or not). The lower gears are small and the upper one is a larger one (not large, the ones that are larger than the large ones but smaller than the prodigious ones). After the heroes get past this, they immediately bump into a long group of smashing machinery composed of twelve pieces of this machinery (six on top, six on the bottom). They open up for the Kongs to head through, however, as the Kongs head through here, they must move up a bit, for every two pieces of machinery on the lower side is higher than the previous two pieces (the same goes for the higher ones, however, the higher ones do not have to be dodged all that much unless the heroes go too high). So, carefully the Kongs can head through the space, moving up a bit, while collecting a long trail of Bananas (it is not required, it is optional). If the Kongs continue going through the trail of Bananas, not only will the exit this space between the two groups of six smashing machinery, but they will also collect a Puzzle Piece at the end of the Banana trail. The next thing the heroes will pass is the Tutorial Pig hosting the second checkpoint. However, the Kongs should stay low, for a larger rotating gear is above them. After the checkpoint, the heroes will reach some more machinery. These machinery are positioned similar to smashing machinery, yet they do not smash into each other. Instead, these machinery move up and down close to one another, creating a narrow space the Kongs must travel through to proceed. Bananas and Banana Bunches are in this space. The first and third pair of machinery move in the same pattern as each other while the second (middle) one moves in a different pattern. So, carefully the heroes should travel through the narrow space between these pairs of machinery by moving slightly up or down to dodge their "attacks". After the heroes pass these pairs of machinery safely, they should move down a bit to dodge a small gear above them. However, they should not move down too low or they can end up crashing into floor beneath them. Immediately after the floor and the small gear, the heroes should move up to avoid a small gear in the floor, this time. However, they should not move up too high or they can crash into the ceiling above them. After this small gear and the ceiling, there are some more pieces of machinery similar to the ones moving up and down (in which the Kongs just passed), which are made up of only one piece of machinery that moves up and down constantly. So, the heroes must dodge these machinery. A long trail of Bananas and Banana Coins can help the Kongs pass the first and second pieces of machinery if they follow it. After the second piece of machinery has been passed, the heroes can move down a bit to dodge another piece of machinery in the ceiling. A secret is just before this piece of machinery. Can you guess what it is? Well, if the heroes collect all the Bananas and Banana Coins in this trail, a Puzzle Piece appears right below this third piece of machinery moving up and down. After this, the heroes can travel through a space between two small gears. The letter N is between these two small gears, which can be collected if the heroes move to it. After the heroes pass these two small gears, they will reach two pairs of four platforms moving up and down, creating a narrow space that they must travel through to proceed. So, with good timing and coordination, the Kongs can carefully go through this space safelly by moving up and down a bit. This helps them dodge the platforms' "attacks". After the Kongs get past this safely, the heroes will end up in an area where they can see an ENORMOUS gear in the background (by the way, the camera zooms out a bit at this point), however the gear, is not facing the same direction as the ones seen earlier. Instead, the gear's face is facing left instead of at the Kongs. This means it is positioned sideways. Well, this gear is larger than the larger than large gears, so is it a prodigious gear? YESS!!! YES IT IS!! These gears obviously get their name because they are just DOWNRIGHT HUGE!!! NO, THEY ARE TREMENDOUS!!! NO, THEY ARE GINORMOUS!!! NO, THEY ARE MONSTROUS!!! NO, THEY ARE OVER-SIZED!!! NO, THEY ARE COLOSSAL!!! Prodigious gears are so big, that they are positioned to face sideways, probably because they are too oversized to face forward. These gears rotate fairly slowly, however their "teeth" are so large that it is a lot of moving up/down to dodge them. The direction the prodigious gears rotate varies upon each gear. Some move up slowly while, others move down slowly. Anyway as the Kongs continue, they will see the first prodigious gear's "tooth" nearing it. Dang, aren't those "teeth" huge! The next gear's "tooth" is moving up next to the first prodigious gear's "tooth". So, to dodge this, the heroes can move down into the space between the first and second prodigious gears' "tooth" to avoid crashing into them. After this, the apes will end up in a large area, still filled with both the previous and next prodigious gears. Four Banana Bunches in a rhombus-like position surround a letter G, which is in between them, are ahead. The heroes can move up into the letter G, however, they should move down a bit to dodge the third prodigious gear's tooth. After the heroes pass the third prodigious gear, they can see the fourth prodigious gear's tooth moving down. The Kongs can head up to avoid this gear's oncoming tooth. After this has been done, the heroes can quickly move down and head past the fifth prodigious gear's tooth before it lands on them. Now, after this, the heroes must travel through a space between two larger (larger than large! Not as big as the prodigious gears) gears before the Rocket Barrel loses its power and crashes onto a floor. After it does so, the Kongs can head a bit to find the Slot Machine Barrel above it. The heroes can then jump to it. When this has been done, Gear Getaway is complete!
- K: Just before the first checkpoint, the Kongs approach a large group of collectibles. Among these collectibles in the sixth (last) column of collectibles is the letter K, and it can be reached if the Kongs move up to it.
- O: Immediately after the Kongs pass an Extra Life Balloon over a floor just before a high pair of two pieces of smashing machinery (the high machinery is after the Extra Life Balloon, yet before the letter O), the heroes can move into the letter O.
- N: Right after the second long trail of Bananas and Banana Coins and the seventh Puzzle Piece, the heroes can move up into the letter N between two gears.
- G: In the area with those DOWNRIGHT PRODIGIOUS gears, the heroes can move into the letter G located between the second and third prodigious gears. After the letter has been collected, the Kongs can then move down to avoid the third prodigious gear's "tooth".
- The first Puzzle Piece is right behind the Kongs. If they take the DK Barrel ahead of them, they can head backwards until they reach a wall. There is a brick part of the wall with a white target painted on it. If the heroes jump and throw the DK Barrel at this brick part of the wall, it breaks, revealing an alcove they can jump into with the first Puzzle Piece in it.
- If the Kongs jump backwards from the first platform moving up and down, they can hover straight into the second lamp above the floor. A Puzzle Piece appears when the second lamp is hit.
- After the second platform moving up and down, the heroes can fall into a gap to land in a hidden Barrel Cannon. The Barrel Cannon fires them up into a Bonus Room. Here, the Kongs can collect forty-seven Bananas, two Banana Coins and an Extra Life Balloon by moving around two moving platforms. If everything is collected within thirty seconds, a Puzzle Piece appears for the Kongs to collect.
- Shortly after the Kongs start up the Rocket Barrel and pass a pair of two smashing machinery, they can collect every Banana in a long trail of Bananas, as well as a Banana Coin at the end of the trail to make a Puzzle Piece appear. The heroes can then move into the Puzzle Piece located between some large and small gears.
- After the letter K, the Kongs must ride between two larger than large gears right after the first group of smashing machinery after the letter, as well. A Puzzle Piece can be seen in the oncoming space of the upper larger than large gear. If the heroes quickly move into the space, the apes can then head into the Puzzle Piece located here.
- Right before the second checkpoint, the heroes must pass through a pair of six smashing machinery, making twelve smashing machinery in total. If the Kongs travel along with the Bananas in the space between these machinery as they open up, the heroes can collect a Puzzle Piece at the end.
- Shortly after the second checkpoint, the heroes can find a long trail of Bananas and Banana Coins that can help them dodge some single pieces of machinery that move up and down. If the heroes collect everything in this long trail, a Puzzle Piece appears for them to collect.
