Grip & Trip is the twenty-fourth level of Donkey Kong Country Returns, as well as the second level of the Cave (Donkey Kong Country Returns). The level takes place in a cave, where the Kongs (Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong) must ride on Minecarts to progress. Unlike the earlier level Crazy Cart, found in the Jungle, and like the previous level Rickety Rails, the Kongs can jump out of their Minecart, instead of jump with it (probably due to the blue coal or jewels in the Minecart). This way, the apes are able to access different Minecarts found throughout the level. Another main feature in this level is its many sections of grassy turf that the primates can cling onto/climb. Additionally, a train begins to ride on the track above the apes, carrying a metal platform with more turf on it. The heroes are able to jump between the Minecart and the metal platform's turf on the train in order to collect collectibles and avoid obstacles. Also, the Kongs must time their jumps, for too early/too late jumps can cause them to fall to their death. The only enemies in this level are Tiki Buzzes, making Grip & Trip one of the only levels in the Cave not to feature Mole Miners and Mole Guards. In Time Attack mode, a time of 1:34:00 is needed to get a gold medal, a time of 1:37:00 for a silver medal, and a time of 1:39:00 for a bronze medal.
OverviewThe level begins with the Kongs landing on a floor with some giant red mushrooms in the background. Here, the Kongs can jump to a very small platform with some grassy turf on a ceiling above it. The apes can then cling onto the grassy turf. Near the turf's end, the Kongs will find a strange brown plant with dirty-colored bubbles coming out of it. The strange plant can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. At the grassy turf's end, the Kongs can jump to a small floor with a DK Barrel on it. There is a Barrel Cannon above a gap at the floor's end. The floor can fire the Kongs to an awaiting Minecart on its track. It starts to move when landed on. Immediately after the Kongs land on it, the track goes down a small curved slope. The Kongs will shortly approach a gap with a curved trail of Bananas with a Banana Bunch in the center. As soon as the apes are directly underneath the first Banana of the trail, they can jump to land on the next Minecart awaiting on its track. The track slightly goes upward. Shortly after this, the Kongs will find a track above them with an awaiting Minecart, as well as the track they are riding on. There are two routes to take, If the Kongs take the upper route (the above track) they can collect two Banana Bunches and two Banana Coins. Shortly after these, the Kongs will find a barrier blocking the track's end that the Minecart will crash into and break. However, the Kongs can jump over the gap with a Puzzle Piece and land on the next Minecart awaiting on its track below them, hopefully. This is a jump that must be timed correctly to collect the Puzzle Piece and land on the next Minecart without dying. Anyway, if the Kongs take the lower route (stay on the track they're on), they can collect many Bananas and a Banana Bunch at the very end. The Minecart falls in the gap shortly after this, which the Kongs can jump over with good timing. Anyway, on the next Minecart, the track goes upward before ending at another gap immediately after doing so. The Kongs can jump over the gap and onto another awaiting Minecart on its track. Here, the apes must jump over a Tiki Buzz hovering in their path. Shortly after this, the Kongs must jump over another gap, where they will hopefully land on another awaiting Minecart on its track. Here, after a while on the track, it goes down a slope and back up. In between this area are two Tiki Buzzes and an Extra Life Balloon is above the enemies. The Kongs can collect the balloon by jumping to it at the right time. Shortly after this, the apes must jump over another gap and land on another awaiting Minecart on its track. Immediately after this, the apes can find an Auto-Fire Barrel that can fire the Kongs into some Bananas and the letter K of the K-O-N-G Letters. The Barrel can be entered with a simple jump. Also, when the Kongs are being fired, the Minecart goes down a small curved slope and catches the apes. Shortly after this, however, the apes must jump over a gap with a curved trail of Bananas over it to land on another Minecart awaiting on its track. The Kongs, soon after landing, must jump over a Tiki Buzz with a broken part of the track immediately after it. If they used good timing, the Kongs will land back onto the Minecart. Shortly after this, is another gap the Kongs can jump over to reach another awaiting Minecart, however there is also a skull Auto-Fire Barrel beneath the Kongs, as soon as they jump over the gap (skull Barrel Cannons/Auto-Fire Barrels destroy themselves when they fire the apes (the Barrels explode). To get inside the skull Auto-Fire Barrel, The Kongs should jump but stop themselves and hover above the Barrel. If done correctly, they will land inside the skull Auto-Fire Barrel and be blasted into a Bonus Room. Anyway on this next Minecart after the gap with the skull Auto-Fire Barrel, or should I say, where the skull Auto-Fire Barrel (if you used the Barrel), the cart goes down a slanted curved hill. There is a trail of Bananas and Banana Bunches on the way down that can be jumped through. The cart then goes over a small gap onto some more track below. The track goes down a little and back up. At the very end, there is a Tiki Buzz with another small broken part of track immediately behind it. There is also a Puzzle Piece ahead of the Tiki Buzz above the next track that can be reached by bouncing on the Tiki Buzz. The cart then goes over the broken part of track, and lands on the next track. The cart passes the Puzzle Piece high above it. There is a Tiki Buzz with another broken part of track immediately after it. The Kongs can jump over the enemy as the cart goes over the small broken part of track onto the next track. Here, it won't take too long before the apes reach another Tiki Buzz with a small, broken part of track immediately after it. The Kongs can jump over the enemy as the cart goes over the gap and onto the next track to land back on the cart safely. Shortly after landing here, there is a gap ahead that the Minecart will fall into, however, the apes can jump onto a ceiling of grassy turf above the track before the gap. There are three hovering Tiki Buzzes above the gap the Kongs cross over using the turf on the ceiling. Near the turf's end, there is a Minecart on its track below the primates that the Kongs can fall onto. The Kongs can collect some Bananas. The Minecart's path soon goes down a large curved slope, however, before the slope is another track with an awaiting Minecart on it above the apes. The Kongs have two choices. They can take the upper route or the lower route, however, the upper route soon comes to the lower route and heads towards a gap with grassy turf on a ceiling above it. If they take the upper route, the apes can collect many Bananas and the letter O, even though they have to jump to get some Bananas and the letter O. The Minecart then falls onto the lower track the apes jumped from right in front of the other Minecart. That means, the apes have to prepare themselves to jump and cling onto some grassy turf shortly. However, if the apes take the lower route, they won't collect anything, but the apes will be more aware of an upcoming gap. Anyway, on the grassy turf, the Kongs can see a metal platform with grassy turf directly beside the turf on the ceiling, in which the apes are on now. The train, who is holding the metal platform, can be seen too, but only half of it is seen. Anyway, when the apes cling onto the metal platform's turf, the train begins to move. The train goes down some hills, nearing the Kongs to a trail of Bananas that they can collect. The train goes up some hills before it approaches a barrier in its path, however, there is a small floor beneath the apes that has a strange brown plant that can be pounded on for a prize most likely, A DK Barrel, and the Tutorial Pig who hosts the checkpoint. Right before the train crashes, the apes can drop to the floor and hit the checkpoint. When they do so, many black bats fly towards the screen from the background. The black bats, however, unlike Squeeklies, they cannot hurt the Kongs and are only a decoration for the Cave, like the many other things in the background. Anyway, on the small floor, the Kongs can jump to a large, red bouncy mushroom and bounce to another large, red bouncy mushroom. Here, the apes can bounce onto a third large, red bouncy mushroom, before bouncing up to a metal platform with grassy turf attached to an awaiting train. When the Kongs cling onto the turf, the train begins to move. The train goes down some small hills before it approaches a trail of Bananas that can lead the Kongs to an awaiting Minecart on a lower track. The Kongs must, using the trail of Bananas to predict when to drop down to the Minecart. If done carefully and correctly, the apes will land on the Minecart. The Minecart goes down a large slope and heads over a broken part of the track, only to land on a track, also going down. This track, is just like the previous, the cart goes down a large slope and heads over a broken part of the track only to land on a straight track. A metal platform covered in grassy turf high above the track can be seen. As soon as the Minecart passes the train's metal platform, the train begins to move. The apes can cling onto the train's metal platform when it is low enough to be grabbed. If the Kongs grab it early, they can grab a trail of Bananas with a Banana Coin at the end that can only be grabbed on the train's metal platform. The Kongs can then drop to the Minecart to grab another trail of Bananas also ending with a Banana Coin. However, the Kongs must quickly grab onto the train's metal platform's grassy turf, for it doesn't take long for the Minecart to approach a barrier, crash, and then break. The Kongs will then pass two Tiki Buzzes hovering, and immediately after this, they will see the letter N, another Minecart awaiting on its lower track, two Tiki Buzzes hovering above the Minecart's track, and a trail of Bananas in front of the Minecart. The Kongs can drop down to the Minecart using the letter N as the signal of when to drop. Here, the path is extremely short. The Kongs will collect a short trail of Bananas ending with a Puzzle Piece. However, immediately after the Puzzle Piece is a gap the Kongs must jump over. With good timing, the Kongs can jump to an awaiting Minecart, however, as soon as they land on this, they have to jump over a gap onto a third Minecart. The train can be seen crashing into a barrier and breaking above the apes. The Minecart heads forward, and it doesn't take long for it to go over a broken part of the track that the apes can jump over, however, it lands on another track and passes a Tiki Buzz hovering in the air. There is a trail of Bananas on the other track, however, if the Kongs do a good bounce on the Tiki Buzz by jumping to it, they can reach an Auto-Fire Barrel in the air. The Auto-Fire Barrel can fire the Kongs to another Auto-Fire Barrel far in the background, which in turn, fires the apes to another Minecart awaiting on its track. The Kongs can collect many Banana Coins and Banana Bunches before they jump over a gap to another Auto-Fire Barrel. The Barrel fires the Kongs to another Minecart. Here, the Kongs can collect more Banana Bunches and Banana Coins before jumping over a gap to another Minecart awaiting on its high track. The Minecart goes down a large slope allowing the apes to collect many Banana Coins and Banana Bunches and it goes over a broken part of track, where the Kongs can collect the letter G and enter an Auto-Fire Barrel, which fires the apes to a Barrel Cannon in the foreground. However, if the apes ignore the first Auto-Fire Barrel, their Minecart will go down a small slope and near a gap (remember we are in the foreground now). There is a trail of Bananas leading to an Auto-Fire Barrel over the gap. When the Kongs jump into the Barrel, it fires them to a Minecart. On the Minecart, when it begins to move, the apes must soon have to jump over a gap and land on another awaiting Minecart on its track. This Minecart goes down a few small hills and then approaches a gap with the Barrel Cannon in it. The Cannon will fire the Kongs to another awaiting Minecart on its track. Shortly after it moves, the apes can jump over a small gap and land on a small floor with the Slot Machine Barrel above it. When the Slot Machine Barrel is hit, the level is complete.
- K: An Auto-Fire Barrel is above the track following the one with the Extra Life Balloon on it. The Barrel shoots the apes to the letter K if they hop into it.
- O: Shortly after the third Puzzle Piece, there is a climbable grassy turf above three Tiki Buzzes hovering over a gap. At the end of the turf, the apes can fall onto a Minecart on its track. Shortly after it moves, they can find another Minecart awaiting on an above track that they can jump to. At the end of this track above the other track, the apes can get the letter O.
- N: After the fourth Puzzle Piece, the Kongs are forced to cling onto a train above a Minecart's track to avoid some roadblocks. After the train passes the barrier that the Minecart crashes into, the apes can find the letter N after two Tiki Buzzes. Using the letter N as a signal to drop to the lower Minecart awaiting on its track, the apes can drop down to collect it, hopefully landing on the Minecart.
- G: The Kongs should high bounce off the last Tiki Buzz of the level to reach an Auto-Fire Barrel. It fires the apes to an Auto-Fire Barrel in the background. The Kongs must then ride Minecarts and enter Auto-Fire Barrels to reach the letter G in the air before the last Auto-Fire Barrel of that area in the background.
- The primates can find a separate track above them as they ride on the second Minecart in the level. They need to jump to the Minecart above them in order to obtain some Banana Bunches, Banana Coins and the Puzzle Piece after a barrier.
- Shortly after getting the K, there are more platforms with tracks. Next to one is a skull Auto-Fire Barrel that the Kongs can jump and hover into. They are fired into a Bonus Room. Here, the apes must shoot through a moving Barrel Cannon in order to collect fifty-seven Bananas, two Banana Coins and an Extra Life Balloon. If they manage to collect everything within the time limit of thirty seconds, a Puzzle Piece appears.
- The Kongs should high bounce off the first Tiki Buzz from the Bonus Room to reach the third Puzzle Piece high in the air.
- The Kongs should pound the strange brown plant to the left of the checkpoint to reveal a Puzzle Piece.
- After getting the letter N and riding on the Minecart after it, there is a Puzzle Piece following a trail of Bananas.
