LongshotLaunch-1-

The Kongs in a Barrel Cannon about to fire through the Tiki statue that has the letter G above it in Longshot Launch.

Longshot Launch is the thirty-third level of Donkey Kong Country Returns, as well as the fifth level of the Forest (Donkey Kong Country Returns). This level is set in a forest where Barrel Cannons and Auto-Fire Barrels (Barrel Cannons mainly) are the only way to get around. Most of the level involves the Kongs (Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong) using Barrel Cannons to reach higher and farther places, however, there are a few parts where the Kongs are on land. Some of the Barrel Cannons are stationary, while others move up and down or left to right constantly. At the middle to the end of the level, the Kongs must time their cannon blasts, for there are now wooden Tiki statues in different colors that they have to fly through. If the apes hit a Tiki statue, they bounce right off and fall to their death. Some of the Barrel Cannons fire the Kongs long distances through the forest. There is also a giant monkey statue with moving teeth that can easily crush the Kongs, however, the apes must find a way to blast through it safely. Enemies in this level are Tiki Boings, brown Skittlers, Flaming Tiki Buzzes, Shroom Chomps and Tiki Zings. In Time Attack mode, a time of 1:01:00 is needed to get a gold medal, a time of 1:34:00 for a silver medal, and a time of 1:37:00 for a bronze medal.

Overview

Longshot Launch1

The Kongs taking the secret way to the first Puzzle Piece of the level. As you can see, a small and large strange plant, as wel as a DK Barrel can be seen.

The level begins with the Kongs landing on a floor with a large and small strange plant (the ones from the Jungle (Donkey Kong Country Returns)) that can be pounded on for a Banana and a Banana Bunch, and a DK Barrel in view. The Kongs can head under a tree structure to find a Tiki Boing nearing them. Tiki Boings can be defeated with a jump. Anyway, after the Tiki Boings, the Kongs can find a skull Barrel Cannon in the air (skull Barrel Cannons/Auto-Fire Barrels destroy themselves, or explode, whatever you want to call it, when they fire the Kongs). Some brown Skittlers come down from their webs near this skull Barrel Cannon and try to hurt the Kongs. However, brown Skittlers can be defeated with a jump. The Kongs can high bounce on a Skittler or another Tiki Boing which slowly jumps closer and closer to the apes (you can also get it by roll-jumping off the slightly slanted part of floor before the skull Barrel Cannon). Here, they will enter the Barrel Cannon where some leaves move away to reveal two Bananas and the second Puzzle Piece in the level (I'll tell you how to get the first shortly). After firing through these collectibles, which automatically collects them, the apes will fall back onto the floor they came from. The Kongs can find two propeller-like plants (also from the Jungle (Donkey Kong Country Returns) that can be blown on for two Bananas. If the apes head up a small hill, they can find two propeller-like plants that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely, and a gap with a Shroom Chomp on a small log with its mouth open. There is a Barrel Cannon above the Shroom Chomp. Anyway, I did say I will show you how to get the first Puzzle Piece. So, the apes must head back to where they had first landed when the level began. There is a gap behind the Kongs' landing spot that has a lone Banana Coin in it. If the apes jump to the Banana Coin, it they will land in a skull Barrel Cannon that can fire the Kongs to a skull Auto-Fire Barrel closer in the foreground. The skull Auto-Fire Barrel then fires the Kongs to another skull Auto-Fire Barrel, allowing the apes to collect a long trail of Bananas on the way. This next skull Auto-Fire Barrel now fires the Kongs to another skull Auto-Fire Barrel, which in turn, fires the apes to another skull Auto-Fire Barrel, allowing the Kongs to collect many Bananas and the first Puzzle Piece along the way. The next skull Auto-Fire Barrel fires the Kongs right back onto the floor where the second pair of propeller-like plants are located before the gap with the Shroom Chomp (note why I explained what was on the floor first before I explained the first Puzzle Piece location). Here, the Kongs should notice a small, red mushroom attached to the Shroom Chomp's mouth. That is its tongue. The Kongs should jump onto this, and bounce into the Barrel Cannon above it. If the apes miss and fall into somewhere else in the Chomp's mouth, the player can shake the Wii Remote to get out of the Shroom Chomp's mouth before they lose a Heart. Anyway, this Barrel Cannon moves left to right constantly. Another Barrel Cannon is above it to the very right. So, when the Barrel Cannon goes underneath the other Barrel Cannon, the Kongs can fire themselves into that Barrel Cannon. Here, there is another Barrel Cannon above this one, however, it is to the very left this time. Also, this Barrel Cannon moves left t

o right constantly. When the Barrel Cannon goes underneath this next Barrel Cannon, the apes can fire themselves into it. Here, the next Barrel Cannon is on the other side of a Flaming Tiki Buzz, however, a trail of Bananas can guide the apes there. The Barrel Cannon the apes are in moves left to right constantly. When the Barrel Cannon moves to the very right, the Kongs can fire themselves and move right to go over the Flaming Tiki Buzz and into the next Barrel Cannon. This Barrel Cannon is a skull Barrel Cannon, however it behaves the same way as the previous three Barrel Cannons (moves left to right constantly) and has the same objective as the previous (the Kongs must fire over another Flaming Tiki Buzz and into a fifth Barrel Cannon). Some Bananas make the trail the apes must follow to land in the fifth Barrel Cannon of this area. When the skull Barrel Cannon moves to its very right, the apes should fire themselves over the Flaming Tiki Buzz and move right to land in the next Barrel Cannon. Here, the apes can find a Barrel Cannon above the very right area of the Barrel Cannon's area, and to the left of it is the letter K of the K-O-N-G Letters. The apes can either fire themselves to the letter K or the next Barrel Cannon as the Barrel Cannon they're in moves side to side constantly. After collecting the letter K, which can be collected by just firing to it when the Barrel Cannon with the Kongs is underneath it, the heroes can then fire themselves to the next Barrel Cannon when their Barrel Cannon goes underneath it. This next Barrel Cannon goes left to right diagonally. There is another Barrel Cannon at its very left point. When the Kongs go underneath this Barrel Cannon, they should fire themselves to the next Barrel Cannon. Here, this Barrel Cannon behaves the same as the previous, however, ther apes have two routes to take. The left route has a Puzzle Piece, and the right has a Barrel Cannon with a trail of Bananas. Both routes take the Kongs to the same place, however, the Puzzle Piece route is faster. So, the Kongs can either fire themselves from the very left or the very right. After firing themselves, the Kongs will land on a large, red, bouncy flower (also from the Jungle (Donkey Kong Country Returns), dang how many things from the Jungle are there in this world?!) on a wall on the right and bounce back onto a lower large, red, bouncy flower on the left wall. The apes will then land on a floor where two Tiki Boings can be found, as well as a large strange

plant that can be pounded on for a collectible. The Kongs can head left and into the gap. They will realize they landed on a large, red, bouncy flower which bounces the Kongs onto a hidden passageway that opens up with the Kongs' presence. Here, the Kongs can find three rows of collectibles. The first one has two Bananas and a Banana Bunch, the second has two Banana Bunches and the fourth Puzzle Piece in the middle, and the third and last row has two Bananas and a Banana Bunch. A small strange plant is here directly after the third row of collectibles that can be pounded on for a Banana Coin. There is also a manhole-like cover beneath the second row of collectibles, which holds the fourth Puzzle Piece. If the apes pound on this manhole-like cover, it flips over, carrying the Kongs with them into a small room. Here, two large strange plants can be found as well as a red area between the two plants. The left large strange plant can be pounded on for a Banana Coin. The large strange plant on the right can be pounded on for a...Wow! The fifth Puzzle Piece is revealed!!! After the two important collectibles have been collected, the Kongs can pound the red area to cause a small, red mushroom to appear. The Kongs can bounce on it to get back onto the hidden passageway with the three rows of collectibles. The Kongs can continue past the small strange plant to find a higher part of floor shortly that holds a red mushroom on it. It bounces the apes back onto the floor they fell from to get this hidden passageway, however, the Kongs will find themselves near a propeller-like plant that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely. A gap is immediately after this propeller-like plant, and it has a skull Barrel Cannon in it. The apes can jump into the skull Barrel Cannon, which aims at a small wooden platform with a small strange plant that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. Here, on this wooden platform, the heroes can find another skull Barrel Cannon above a gap. The apes can jump into this Barrel Cannon, which begins to move left

to right constantly. There is a trail of two Bananas with the letter O on top, however, to make collecting this more difficult, two Tiki Zings have been placed beside the trail of Bananas. So, the Kongs must time their jump if they want to collect the collectibles and avoid losing a Heart. After the apes successfully fire themselves, they will land on a wooden platform with two propeller-like plants near its left edge that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely. Also, a skull Barrel Cannon can be found above a gap nearby. When the Kongs enter this, the Barrel Cannon moves side to side constantly. A Barrel Cannon is at the very right. If the primates fire themselves when underneath the next Barrel Cannon, which is a skull Barrel Cannon, they will enter it. This skull Barrel Cannon moves left to right like the previous, however, the next Barrel Cannon, which also is a skull Barrel Cannon, is to the very left. So, when the apes are underneath this next skull Barrel Cannon, they can fire themselves to this next skull Barrel Cannon. This next skull Barrel Cannon moves left to right constantly, like its previous cousins. A Barrel Cannon is to the very right of this skull Barrel Cannon.
Longshot Launch5

The Kongs have fired themselves through the first Barrel Cannon that fires the apes through a large and long distance through the forest. So, the apes are being shot through the long and large distance part in this picture.

When the Kongs are underneath it, they can fire themselves into the Barrel Cannon. The Barrel Cannon then fires the Kongs a very large and long distance through the forest, where the Kongs eventually enter a skull Auto-Fire Barrel, which fires them to a floor with a small strange plant that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely, a Tiki Boing nearing the primates, and the Tutorial Pig hosting the first checkpoint. After the checkpoint, it doesn't take long for the apes to reach a gap. The gap has a Barrel Cannon in it. When the apes enter this Barrel Cannon, it moves up and down, and they can see a green Tiki statue which they must fly through to reach the next Barrel Cannon. With good timing, the apes should fire themselves through the Tiki statue, which causes it to close its mouth (all of these Tiki statues do that until after the second checkpoint, where they do something different). The Kongs will also collect the collectibles in their path as they make it to the next Barrel Cannon. The apes will land in the next Barrel Cannon which also moves up and down. The Kongs must now fire through a red Tiki statue with good timing. So, when they reach the opening in the Tiki statue, the Kongs should quickly fire themselves to the next Barrel Cannon, collecting the collectibles along the way. In this next Barrel Cannon, the objective for the Kongs is to fire through two Tiki statues next to each other: one green, one red. This Barrel Cannon also moves up and down constantly, so the apes must time their cannon blast. At the right time, the primates should fire themselves through these two Tiki statues while collecting collectibles along the way to enter the next Barrel Cannon. Here in this next Barrel Cannon, the objective for the heroes is slightly different. First of all, yes the apes are shooting through a Tiki statue colored green, however, the path to the next Barrel Cannon is curved, and the Barrel Cannon moves up and down diagonally. With good timing, the Kongs should fire themselves to the next Barrel Cannon and move right to enter it. They will also collect Bananas and Banana Bunches along the way, which are the same collectibles the Kongs have collected with the previous Tiki statues and also with the next Tiki statues. In this next Barrel Cannon, it moves up and down diagonally, however, the opposite way of the previous. The objective for the Kongs is to fire to a Barrel Cannon, however, a Banana Bunch can help tell the Kongs when to fire. So, when the Kongs are in front of the the Banana Bunch, they should fire themselves quickly to land in the Barrel Cannon. The objective for this Barrel Cannon is pretty much like the one before the previous, however, the apes are not flying through a curved path through a Tiki statue. Instead, the Barrel Cannon behaves like the one before the previous. With good timing, the Kongs should fire themselves through this red Tiki statue to enter the next Barrel Cannon. This Barrel Cannon behaves like the one with the Banana Bunch before the next Barrel Cannon. The objective for the Kongs here is to fly through three Tiki statues: two red and one green next to each to reach the next Barrel Cannon. So, with good timing, the Kongs should fire themselves to reach the next Barrel Cannon. The heroes will collect two Banana Bunches along the way. This Barrel Cannon moves up and down constantly, however, the objective is not to fire through a Tiki statue, but to fire to a Barrel Cannon. A trail of Bananas with a Banana Bunch in the middle to help the Kongs know when to fire, however, still timing is slightly harder at this point than with the previous (it's my opinion, everyone has different opinions). With extra good timing, the Kongs should fire themselves to the next Barrel Cannon. This Barrel Cannon moves up and down constantly, and the objective for the heroes is to fire to another Barrel Cannon. A trail of Bananas with the letter N in the middle can help the Kongs know when to fire. With good timing, the apes should fire to the next Barrel Cannon. This Barrel Cannon moves up and down, and the objective for the apes is to fire through one last Tiki statue before the second checkpoint to reach the next Barrel Cannon. A trail of Bananas with a Banana Bunch in the middle, which can help the Kongs know when to fire, however, they must try not to hit the Tiki statue, for if they do, they will bounce off and lose an Extra Life Balloon. With extra good timing, the Kongs should fire themselves to the next Barrel Cannon. This Barrel Cannon can, in turn, fire the Kongs through a large and long distance through the forest, even though this distance is

The apes bounce off the large, red, bouncy flower and the second checkpoint is being marked.

shorter than the first. Soon, the apes enter a skull Auto-Fire Barrel over a lower floor (even though the skull Auto-Fire Barrel is next to a higher floor) that has a large strange plant on a slightly higher part of floor, a Tiki Boing that jumps down here, and the Tutorial Pig hosting the second checkpoint. The skull Auto-Fire Barrel automatically fires the apes to a large, red, bouncy flower to the left of the Barrel. When the apes pass over the Tutorial Pig hosting the second checkpoint, the checkpoint is automatically marked. Here, the apes can jump onto the higher part of floor with the large strange plant on it that can be pounded on for a Banana Bunch, however, they must watch out for a Tiki Boing and a brown Skittler heading their way to attack from the higher floor. Both enemies can be defeated with a jump, however, the apes must still make sure the enemies don't fall on them. Anyway, after the enemies have been defeated, the apes can jump onto the higher floor. Here, they can find a small strange plant that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely, and a DK Barrel. The apes can then continue and fall to a floor where three brown Skittlers come down from their webs and approach the Kongs. Also, many propeller-like plants are here that, most of which, can be blown on for collectibles, most likely. The brown Skittlers can be defeated with a jump. There is a manhole-like cover in the middle of the floor, that when pounded on, flips over, carrying the Kongs with it. The Kongs will now find themselves in a Bonus Room. Anyway, shortly after the manhole-like cover, there is a gap ahead with a skull Barrel Cannon in it. When the Kongs jump into the skull Barrel Cannon, it aims at another skull Barrel Cannon with a Banana Bunch in front of it. The duo can also see a red (even though this type Tiki statue is more red and different from the previous ones, and all of the ones after the second checkpoint tend to be colored this color) Tiki statue repeatedly opening and closing its mouth. This how every Tiki statue after the second checkpoint behaves. Anyway, the apes can fire themselves to the next Barrel Cannon. Here, the objective is to fly through this Tiki statue's mouth when it is open. With good timing, the apes should fire themselves to the next Barrel Cannon, collecting a trail of Bananas and a Banana Bunch along the way. In this next Barrel Cannon, the objective is to fire through two Tiki statues who repeatedly open and close their mouths at the same time to reach a skull Auto-Fire Barrel. So, with good timing, the heroes should fire themselves through the two Tiki statues into the skull Auto-Fire Barrel, while collecting Bananas and a Banana Bunch along the way. The skull Auto-Fire Barrel fires the Kongs to a skull Auto-Fire Barrel above it. This next skull Auto-Fire Barrel automatically fires the apes to another skull Auto-Fire Barrel to the left of it. This next skull Auto-Fire Barrel fires the Kongs between the two Tiki statues to another skull Auto-Fire Barrel below it. This skull Auto-Fire Barrel automatically fires the apes to a Barrel Cannon. The objective for the Kongs when they enter this Barrel Cannon is to really shoot through a Tiki statue to reach a skull Barrel Cannon, however the letter G can be found above the Tiki statue's head. This Barrel Cannon has three angles, and it changes its angle every second. So, the apes have two choices. They can either fire through the Tiki statue which opens and closes its mouth repeatedly, or avoid the Tiki statue and collect the letter G by firing when the Barrel Cannon points up diagonally. However, the Kongs will have to move themselves right after firing. If the Kongs take the route with the letter G, the next Barrel Cannon, which is a skull Barrel Cannon, turns its opening to face where the Kongs are coming from so it can catch the Kongs. Here, the objective is slightly harder because it's not just firing through a Tiki statue, but THERE'S A SKULL AUTO-FIRE BARREL RIGHT BEFORE THE TIKI STATUE!!! So, THAT'S DOUBLE TIMING!!!! The skull Barrel Cannon, anyway, aims at the skull Auto-Fire Barrel. As soon as the Tiki statue opens its mouth, the apes should fire themselves to the skull Auto-Fire Barrel which automatically fires them through the Tiki statue to a skull Barrel Cannon just before another Tiki statue. Here, the objective is to fire through this last Tiki statue of the level before the Kongs face the deadly giant monkey statue with moving teeth. With good timing, the apes should fire themselves through the Tiki statue to reach and enter a skull Auto-Fire Barrel. The skull Auto-Fire Barrel fires the primates to another skull Auto-Fire Barrel below diagonally. This skull Auto-Fire Barrel,

in turn, fires the apes to a skull Barrel Cannon with a skull Auto-Fire Barrel just before the giant monkey statue with moving teeth. No, NOT AGAIN!!! YOU MEAN THE OBJECTIVE IS TO FIRE THROUGH A SKULL BARREL CANNON AND A SKULL AUTO-FIRE BARREL, WHICH FIRES YOU THROUGH A GIANT MONKEY STATUE WITH MOVING TEETH!!!! Well, that's the objective, and there's no other way around. So, the apes have no choice but to fire through the giant monkey statue with moving teeth. This statue's teeth can easily take out the Kongs with one touch, so if you lose an Extra Life Balloon, you didn't time well. The way to get through this, however, is just before the monkey statue moves its teeth up again, the apes should quickly fire to the skull Auto-Fire Barrel which should take the Kongs through the giant monkey statue's mouth safely. They will collect Bananas and Banana Bunches along the way. The apes will then enter another skull Auto-Fire Barrel which fires the apes to a wooden platform with the Slot Machine Barrel above it. There is another wooden platform that cannot be seen, however, the Kongs can see a large strange plant on what looks like a gap after the wooden platform with the Slot Machine Barrel above it. But, strange plants don't grow over abysses. So, the apes should head towards the large strange plant to land on a small platform. Here, they can pound on the strange plant to reveal a Puzzle Piece. The apes can then head back up to the platform with the Slot Machine Barrel above it. When the Slot Machine Barrel is hit, the level is complete!

K-O-N-G Letters

  • K:
    Longshot Launch3 K-O-N-G Letter K

The Kongs fire to the letter K.

If the heroes shoot out of the Barrel Cannon immediately after the second Flaming Tiki Buzz in the level, they can reach the letter K, which is to the left of the following Barrel Cannon.
  • O: Shortly before the first checkpoint, the Kongs must get into a skull Barrel Cannon that they must use to blast between two Tiki Zings. The letter O is in a trail of two Bananas between these enemies.
  • N: Near the end of area that involves the heroes blasting through stationary Tiki statues, the letter N can be seen between two Barrel Cannons along with a trail of Bananas. However, the Kongs must really time their blast if they want to collect this letter.
  • G: Not too long before the end of the level, the Kongs enter the first Barrel Cannon thar has three different angles it changes to every second. The letter G is above the Tiki Statue they must fire through, and can be reached if the Kongs fire when the Barrel Cannon points up diagonally. However, they must move right to enter the next Barrel Cannon after firing.

Puzzle Pieces

  1. LongshotLaunch165-1-

The Kongs in a Bonus Room.

The Kongs, at the start of the level, should head backwards to find a lone Banana Coin in a gap. If the apes drop here, they will enter a skull Barrel Cannon that fires them to a series of skull Auto-Fire Barrels. The skull Auto-Fire Barrels fire the heroes through many Bananas and also the first Puzzle Piece.
  2. Near the beginning of the level, there is a skull Barrel Cannon above the floor with the first DK Barrel. The apes can enter it by high bouncing on a Tiki Boing, or roll-jumping on the small slope part in the floor. Here, some leaves move away, revealing the second Puzzle Piece and a trail of two Bananas that the Kongs can shoot to.
  3. When the Kongs shoot through the Barrel Cannons that move in a diagonal path shortly after the letter K, they should notice a Puzzle Piece hidden in some leaves to the left of the next Barrel Cannon. The apes can shoot to it to grab it.
  4. On the floor the apes land to after shooting from the Barrel Cannon with the third Puzzle Piece, the apes can head backwards and down a gap. They will instead, land on a large, red, bouncy flower that bounces them onto a hidden passageway that opens up with their presence. Here, there are three rows of collectibles. The Puzzle Piece is in the middle of the second row.
  5. Directly below the second row with the fourth Puzzle Piece is a manhole-shaped cover that can be pounded on to cause it to flip over, carrying the Kongs with it. The Kongs will land in a small room that has two large strange plants each on the opposite side of the other. The large strange plant on the left reveals a Banana Coin when pounded on, and the large strange plant on the right reveals a Puzzle Piece when pounded on.
  6. Shortly after the second DK Barrel, the apes can pound a manhole-shaped cover on a floor where some brown Skittlers come down from their webs approach the Kongs. The manhole-shaped cover flips over, taking the Kongs with it into a Bonus Room. Here, the apes must use a bouncy moving trampoline to collect ninety-nine Bananas and three Banana Coins. If everything is collected within thirty seconds, a Puzzle Piece appears, which is theirs to collect.
  7. The duo should ignore the Slot Machine Barrel and drop down to a hidden platform to the right of the platform with the Slot Machine Barrel above it. The Kongs can pound the large strange plant here to reveal the seventh and final Puzzle Piece.

Trivia

  • In some parts of the level, if the Kongs look closely when they are firing from Barrel Cannon to Barrel Cannon (before the part with the Tiki statues) they can see large totem poles that resemble the last totem pole that holds the Slot Machine Barrel in Tippin' Totems.
