Pillars, more commonly known as Spiked Pillars, are dangerous obstacles in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Donkey Kong Country Returns. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, they are very common, appearing in fortresses and castles. They are black with golden spikes on every side of them. In this game (NSMB Wii), there are two types of Pillars- normal-sized Pillars and giant Pillars. Touching any of these pillars results in the player losing a form, or dying if at small form. Pillars appear in castles and fortresses, but the place that has the most Pillars is World 7's Castle, with a total of 40 to avoid, both giant and normal-sized Pillars. Not every Pillar moves the same. Some Pillars move all of a sudden and stop in any direction, then rise or go backwards. Other Pillars come out a little (they make a "ching" sound when doing this) and then dash out in the direction above, below, to the left, or right of them. Pillars are indestructible in this game. Some move rapidly, others are slower than that. Giant Pillars are rarer than normal ones, only appearing in World 6-Fortress and World 7's Castle. In Donkey Kong Country Returns, some spiked Pillars appear in the level, Jagged Jewels.
