The Kongs jump over some Skellyrexes in Minecarts in Prehistoric Path.

Prehistoric Path is the thirty-ninth level of Donkey Kong Country Returns, as well as the second level of the Cliff (Donkey Kong Country Returns). This level takes place on a high mountain, where the Kongs (Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong) must ride in a Minecart over many falling rock platforms through most of the level. The area around the heroes is constantly changing, with platforms moving or falling and Skellyrexes riding in Minecarts (much like how Mole Miners ride in Minecarts in (Crazy Cart, and some of the Minecart levels in the Cave. A sticky substance known as tar (well, you all should know about tar already), is under some parts of the track, causing some of the platforms to slowly sink into the tar with the Kongs' weight, only to rise back up again when the heroes jump off of it. Additionally spikes attached to large objects holding large, prehistoric dinosaur eggs are placed in tight spaces, having the Kongs duck (crouch down) in the cart to avoid hitting them and losing an Extra Life Balloon. Tar is a very dangerous obstacle which should be avoided at all costs in this level, for if the heroes fall into the lake of tar below while riding through the level, they will instantly die and lose an Extra Life Balloon. While most of the level takes place in a Minecart, the beginning takes place on land, having the heroes travel over some sinking platforms over a pond of tar. Near the level's end, a large, prehistoric dinosaur egg breaks apart from the wall, and the Kongs have to ride on top of it, and later inside of it, while avoiding the enemies and tooth-like bones protruding from the ground. Enemies in this level include walking and riding in Minecart Skellyrexes, Tiki Buzzes, Tiki Torks, and Flaming Tiki Buzzes. In Time Attack mode, a time of 1:34:00 is needed to get a gold medal, a time of 1:35:00 to earn a silver medal, and a time of 1:37:00 for a bronze medal.

Overview

640px-PrehistoricPath165-1-

The Kongs in midair. Two Skellyrexes can be seen on a sinking platform over the pond of tar. This is at the beginning of the level.

The level begins with the Kongs landing on a floor that leads to a wooden bridge. The Kongs land right in front of a cactus that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. Anyway, if the heroes move to the end of this wooden bridge, which goes over part of a large pond of tar (which should be avoided; if the Kongs step in tar, they cannot move fast or jump high until it is Ground Pounded off of them. Also, if the heroes do not move in the tar, they will sink into it and lose an Extra Life Balloon). Here, the heroes can see a small, wooden, raised platform with an even smaller and lower platform attached to it in the tar. The Kongs should jump here. As soon as the Kongs step foot on this platform, it starts to slowly sink into the tar, however, another much larger raised, wooden platform with a smaller, lower one attached to it, two Skellyrexes on it, a trail of three Bananas on it, and a Banana Bunch high in the air, which can only be reached with a high bounce off a Skellyrex can be found. Quickly, before the platform gets too low, the heroes should jump to this larger platform. This platform sinks by the way, like the first when stepped on, however, the heroes can run to the platform's edge. Here, the heroes can find a platform similar to the first at this platform's edge. There is a Barrel Cannon above it to the right. The heroes can jump to this platform. WAIT, DON'T YOU DARE JUMP INSIDE THAT BARREL CANNON!!! On this platform, you can see a strange piece of land holding a cactus that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely at the end of this pond of tar. The apes should head into the tar, and jump repeatedly (so that they won't sink into the tar) to the right until they reach the piece of land. A tunnel is ahead. If the heroes go into this tunnel, they will enter a Bonus Room. Hmmm, a Bonus Room at the very beginning of the level? Anyway, after coming from the Bonus Room, the heroes can just roll-jump, and most likely, the Barrel Cannon will catch them. Anyway, if the heroes choose to not go to the Bonus Room and, instead, ignore it, they can just jump into the Barrel Cannon. The Barrel Cannon aims at a wooden fence with a Minecart in front of it. When the heroes fire (you may have to move right to get here), they will break through the fence and land right inside the Minecart. The Minecart goes up a small hill and then goes down a very steep slope that holds a long trail of Bananas. There is a gap ahead. The Minecart will go over this gap and land on a large piece of track that slowly sinks into the tar when landed on. While on this track, the heroes will approach a small gap in the track, which they must jump over to land on another piece of track. There is an even larger gap that holds an arch of Bananas with the letter K of the K-O-N-G Letters in the middle of them which the heroes must jump over immediately when the apes land here. When they jump over this gap, they will most likely land on another piece of track. When the heroes land here, they must immediately jump onto another large track. Anyway, shortly after landing here, the heroes must duck while the track sinks into the tar, so that they can avoid touching some spikes attached to large objects holding large, prehistoric dinosaur eggs in them. After ducking underneath the spikes, the next thing for the heroes to do is to jump over a small gap (it's still larger than the previous two) only to land on a rock floor (like normal floors are) that holds three Skellyrexes riding in Minecarts, as well as a Banana Coin high in the air, which can only be reached with a high bounce off of one of the Skellyrexes. Anyway, when the heroes land here, they can continue on. Shortly after the three enemies in Minecarts, the heroes will approach a gap they must jump over to reach another track with spikes they must duck to avoid. The heroes should jump over this gap. Once they land on the next track, which sinks into the tar, they should immediatly duck, for the Minecart will go under a small group of spikes attached to a large object with large dinosaur eggs in it. After going past this group of spikes, it won't be long before the heroes approach another group of spikes they must duck to avoid. However, before the heroes get here, they must first jump over a Skellyrex in a Minecart heading towards them. The heroes should make sure that when they do jump over this enemy, they do not defeat it, for if they do defeat the enemy, it gives them a little higher jump (as always). Most jumps from these enemies are helpful, but this one is not! With the small jump given from the defeated enemy in a Minecart, the Kongs will end up crashing right into the large object attached to the spikes, causing them to die and start over (unless you get a Game Over). However, an arch of Bananas that starts close to the first set of spikes and ends close to the second set of spikes can tell you when to jump over this enemy (jump as soon as you are underneath it). After jumping over this enemy, the heroes should, once again, duck, so that they can travel safely underneath this group of spikes. After passing it, the heroes will see a higher track that they can jump to. If the heroes take the track they are on, they can go through a trail of Bananas and the letter O before jumping onto the higher track, for the track ends here. Since the track is sinking, the heroes must jump immediately after the letter O is collected, or they will land in the lake of tar and die. When the heroes jump onto the track, they must now jump over a gap, and high bounce on a Tiki Buzz in it to reach a Banana Bunch high in the air and land on another track. The Minecart goes up a small hill before it approaches another group of spikes. When the Minecart approaches the spikes, the heroes should duck. The track soon ends, and a Tiki Buzz is in a gap nearby. Another Tiki Buzz is after it, and two arches of three Bananas are between them (one between one, one between the other). A third Tiki Buzz is also after this second Tiki Buzz. Anyway, the heroes should continue to duck, until they land on the Tiki Buzz. They will be given a small jump by the enemy, causing them to land on the second Tiki Buzz. They will be given a small jump causing them to land on the third Tiki Buzz, however, the heroes should high bounce on this third Tiki Buzz to head over a large tooth-like bone in the way. If the heroes do not high bounce on this last Tiki Buzz in this area, then they will not be able to jump over the tooth-like bone in the way, and instead, crash into it and die. Anyway, after going over the tooth-like bone and collecting an arch of three Bananas with a Banana Bunch in the middle, the heroes will bounce off of a Tiki Tork onto a track on normal rock that has broken off and tilts into the tar in a slanted position. The Minecart will ride up this until the heroes reach a gap. Another rock track is after the gap. The heroes should jump over this gap onto the rock track. When the heroes land on this track, it tilts to the right, causing the heroes to go down and increase speed on the track, as well as knocking over a rock that falls head on into the track. The heroes can jump over a gap onto this rock. As soon as the apes land here, the rock sinks, however, the Kongs can save themselves by high bouncing onto a Tiki Tork after this so that they can land on another slanted rock track. When the heroes go onto this track, half of it breaks apart ahead, so the heroes now have to jump over a gap created by the two broken halves and land on the other half of the rock track. The other half falls when the heroes land on it, and the heroes can jump onto another track just before it lands. On this other track, the heroes must duck for the first thing the Minecart will approach are some more spikes attached to a large object, however, this large object holds a wooden platform with the Tutorial Pig hosting the first and only checkpoint in the level on top of it. The heroes will pass another broken track high above them to the right of the checkpoint. This is the track that holds the Minecart if you ever manage to die after the checkpoint and restart. Anyway, shortly after passing the track high in the air, the heroes will have to jump over a small gap onto another track. On this other track, the Minecart goes up a small hill before it passes under some spikes attached to a large object containing large, prehistoric dinosaur eggs. So, before the Minecart goes under the spikes, the Kongs should duck. The track ends still under the spikes, like the one quite a while ago, however, a Tiki Buzz is nearby. There are two Tiki Torks after this Tiki Buzz: One higher in the air to the right that holds the letter N, and one lower one directly beneath this one that holds a Banana Bunch. After these Tiki Torks is a Tiki Buzz. So, the Kongs have two routes. They can either high bounce on the Tiki Buzz to reach the Tiki Tork with the letter N, collect the letter, drop down to the Tiki Buzz after it and high bounce to reach a track higher than another (or just high bounce on the Tiki Tork to reach the lower track), or they can bounce (not high bounce, but rather just get the bounce from a defeated Tiki Buzz) on the Tiki Buzz to drop to the lower Tiki Tork with the the Banana Bunch, high bounce up to the other Tiki Buzz after it and drop down to the lower track (or high bounce onto the Tiki Buzz

to reach the higher track). Now this is where each track leads the Kongs to. The higher track is a little wavy in shape, but it is the easier of the two routes to reach another slanted rock track, for the Kongs must just drop down at the end of the track to a Tiki Tork and high bounce onto the slanted rock track. However, if the heroes take the lower track, they must jump over a gap of tar to land on the other side. Immediately after landing on the other side, the heroes must jump to and high bounce on the Tiki Tork to reach the slanted rock pathway. However, the Kongs can collect two Banana Bunches along the way with the lower route. Anyway, when the Kongs land on this slanted rock track, which appears to be larger than it looked before, the heroes must now jump over a Skellyrex approaching them in its Minecart while this large rock track tilts to the right. As soon as the track tilts enough to see another track after it, the Kongs can jump to this track. This track has a small spike area on it, however, when the apes land here, right beside the spikes, the track breaks, once again, in half. So, the apes must duck for the spikes and jump to land on the next track. On this next track, it tilts toward another rock track that has a Skellyrex in its Minecart approaching the Kongs. Being aware of the Skellyrex, the heroes should jump to the next track. Here, the Kongs will ride on to find the letter G getting closer as they approach it. However, almost immediately after the letter G comes into view, the track breaks in half, carrying the letter G on the other half. The other half ends up being on the left edge of the the other half, and the other half is under a Tiki Tork. WHAT!!! BUT, BUT, BUT THAT WASN'T FAIR!!!! Games and their tricks these days. Anyway, to reach the letter G, the Kongs will have to drop down to the lower half and collect the letter, then jump on another slanted to the right rock track that has spikes above it. Anyway, if the heroes ignore the letter, they should high bounce on the Tiki Tork to land on the next track. Once they land on this next track, the apes should duck to avoid the spikes as the rock track slowly falls into the tar. Once another rock track comes into view, the heroes should jump onto it. On this track, the heroes should duck, for they will start approaching some spikes. The end of the track is also under the tracks, however, instead of a Tiki Buzz, there is a giant, prehistoric dinosaur egg. Once the Kongs land on the giant, prehistoric dinosaur egg, the egg breaks off of where it is attached to, knocking its front face off, and begins to move forward. On this moving dinosaur egg, the first thing the heroes will approach is a trail of five Bananas with a Tiki Buzz after the fifth Banana. The heroes should jump over the Tiki Buzz they are approaching. The heroes will then approach another trail of five Bananas with a Tiki Buzz after the fifth Tiki Buzz. The Kongs should jump over the Tiki Buzz. The egg will hit a giant, fossilized, tooth-like bone in the ground, causing it to break part of its shell off. Also, the heroes will approach a trail of five Bananas, this time, with two Flaming Tiki Buzzes after the fifth Banana. Once the heroes jump over the two Flaming Tiki Buzzes, they will drop inside the hole created when the egg rolled into the tooth-like bone in the ground. Now, the heroes are inside the egg. As the egg rolls, the heroes should jump over the gap when it gets near. After this is done, the egg approachs two tooth-like bones in the ground with a large space in between them. The heroes should jump over the first tooth-like bone, which also makes them jump over the hole in the egg. Now, the egg hits the other tooth-like bone in the ground, causing part of it to break off. So, with that being said, the heroes should jump over the gap created in the egg. Now, the next thing the heroes approach is a Puzzle Piece over a small gap of tar. The heroes can jump into this Puzzle Piece, however, they should make sure they land on the egg. Now, while jumping over the two gaps in the egg, the egg rolls over another gap of tar and approaches three more tooth-like bones in the ground. Each tooth-like bone has a space between them. Now, the heroes should jump over the first two tooth-like bones, which causes them to also jump over the two gaps in the egg. However, part of the egg crashes into the third tooth-like bone in the ground. Now, the heroes must jump over a third gap in the egg before the egg crashes into a tooth-like bone in the ceiling and shatters into pieces. After this is done, the heroes will reach an area of platforms they must jump over which jerk (move with lurch, definition gotten from thesaurus.com ) into the tar when landed inside. The platforms get smaller as the heroes travel over this area. After the heroes jump off the last platform of this area, they will land on a bumpy track that causes them to fly out of the Minecart and land on a platform with a cactus that can be pounded on for a Puzzle Piece and the Slot Machine Barrel hovering in the air. When the heroes jump into the Slot Machine Barrel, the level is complete!

Secrets

K-O-N-G Letters

  • K: Shortly after the apes enter the Minecart, they come up to the letter K above the third gap with Bananas above it.
  • O: Not too long after the Kongs pass a trio of Skellyrexes in Minecarts, the Kongs come under two spikes attached to large objects and head towards the end of the track. At the end of it is the letter O under another track that must be jumped onto as soon as the letter is collected to avoid sinking into the tar.
  • N: After ducking under the first set of spikes after the checkpoint, the heroes come up to some Tiki Buzzes and Tiki Torks that must be bounced on to avoid falling into the lake of tar. If the heroes high bounce on the first Tiki Buzz, they can reach a Tiki Tork with a letter N above it on a higher part.
  • G: Before the heroes reach the giant, prehistoric, dinosaur egg, they can find the letter G on a separate track, underneath a Tiki Tork. If the heroes avoid jumping onto the next track, they can fall onto this track, collect the letter, and jump onto the next track.

Puzzle Pieces

  1. PrehistoricPath365-1-

The Kongs in a Bonus Room.

At the end of the last platform that sinks into the tar when stepped on before the Minecart, the heroes can see another piece of land. The Kongs can jump into the tar and jump repeatedly until they reach this piece of land. A tunnel is ahead that leads the Kongs into a Bonus Room. Here, the heroes must maneuver around two moving platforms to collect in order to collect forty-seven Bananas, two Banana Coins, and an Extra Life Balloon. Once everything is collect within thirty seconds, a Puzzle Piece appears that the heroes can jump to.
  2. Before the heroes land under the first set of spikes before the letter O, the Kongs should jump into the side of the object holding the spikes to reveal a hidden area with a Puzzle Piece inside.
  3. Immediately after the letter N, the primates can make a high bounce off of a final Tiki Buzz to land on a high track that is placed above another track. At the end of this track is the Puzzle Piece above the gap between the next platform.
  4. Near the end of the level, just before the Kongs escape the giant egg, the fourth Puzzle Piece can be found above a small gap, and it requires a well-timed jump to reach.
  5. On the platform with the Slot Machine Barrel above it, the heroes can find a cactus that can be pounded on for a Puzzle Piece.
