Rickety Rails is the twenty-third level in Donkey Kong Country Returns as well as the first level of the Cave (Donkey Kong Country Returns). The level takes place in a cave, of course, which can only be entered if the Kongs (Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong) blast away its entrance. Here, the apes must use Minecarts to progress over a rickety track. Unlike the previous level, Crazy Cart, which was found in the Jungle (Donkey Kong Country Returns), the Kongs can jump out of the cart, instead of jumping wit it (probably because of the blue coal or jewels inside it). This way, the primates can access more than one Minecart. The main obstacle in this level are the falling platforms and sections of the track. Even on the short portions of the level where the apes are on land, platforms still continue to fall with their weight. Sometimes, the sections of track fall off in front and behind the Kongs leaving them no choice but to jump into Barrel Cannons to survive. Occasionally, the track tilts up or down, making the Kongs go faster or slower depending on the direction it tilts. Large, falling crystals can also break part of the track, which creates a gap the apes must jump over. Also, one very important tip that goes for all Minecart levels in the Cave and the others in other worlds, the Kongs must time their jumps, for if they jump to early or too late, they can fall into a gap and be killed, causing them to lose an Extra Life Balloon. The only enemies in this level are regular Squeeklies and Tiki Buzzes, as well as two Tiki Goons near the beginning of the level. In Time Attack mode, a time of 1:26:00 is needed to get a gold medal, a time of 1:36:00 for a silver medal, and a time of 1:45:00 for a bronze medal.
OverviewThe level begins with the Kongs landing on a rushing stream on a platform, with a large fountain statue behind them, spitting water from its mouth. The stream on the platform the Kongs are on, has a slope going downards that the Kong's can see from here. When the Kongs slide /roll down this slope, they can jump to a floor that slightly goes upward. A dandelion is here that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely. At the end of this floor, over a gap, is a Barrel Cannon that can fire the apes to the floor in the background. Four strange plants that can be pounded on for a prize are here, as well as a trail of four Bananas and a dandelion that can be blown on for a prize, most likely. The strange plants range in size: there are two big and two small and three on the part of floor the Kongs land on, and one on a slightly lower area of the floor to the very left of this area. The apes should notice a large rock wall behind where they've landed past the dandelion that is covered in dynamite on strings. If the apes hit this, they will realize they cannot get through this (you don't have to hit it if you are playing and following along). Anyway, the apes should instead pound on the big strange plant in front of them, (the one on the slope, not the one next to them). When pounded on, a Barrel Cannon appears, and can fire the apes to small floor in the air that could be seen in the foreground where the Kong's landed, which holds a DK Barrel and a large dynamite crate with a switch on it. After releasing Diddy (if you don't have him) from the DK Barrel, the Kongs must jump onto the switch and the dynamite on the large rock wall lights up and explodes, opening the cave's entrance. There is a Barrel Cannon above a gap to the left of this floor and it can fire the apes back to the floor in the background. The apes can now walk into the cave's entrance. The first thing they will pass is a long trail of Bananas with a Banana Coin that goes in the air and comes back down (let's say a hill shape) and a Tiki Goon. Shortly after passing this area, the apes can fall to a slightly lower platform where they can find a very strange brown plant that has brown bubbles coming out of it. When the Kongs pound this plant, they can receive a collectible, most likely. You see, these are just a different type of object that can be pounded on for the Cave world, just like how strange plants are the objects that can be pounded on for the Jungle (Donkey Kong Country Returns) and the Forest (Donkey Kong Country Returns), and urns are the objects that can be pounded on for the Ruins (Donkey Kong Country Returns). Anyway, the apes can then jump onto a higher part of floor, which is the same height as the floor the primates fell from. This platform holds a Tiki Goon who walks back and form. After passing this, the Kongs will now land on a large lower part of floor with another strange brown plant that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely, a tall rock wall in front of the apes, and some small wooden platforms above the apes. Since the rock wall is way too tall for the apes to jump over, they must use the wooden platforms to proceed. The Kongs should jump on the first wooden platform, then onto the second wooden platform, and then to the third and final wooden platform. On the third wooden platform, the Kongs can find a Barrel Cannon to their left they can jump into. The cannon aims the Kongs over the rock wall's tip, and can then fire them over it. When the apes land on the other side of the rock wall, they will slide down it's curved shape end and fall into a Barrel Cannon over a gap. The Barrel Cannon then fires the apes to a Minecart full of blue coal or jewels, just waiting to be landed on. When it is landed on, the Minecart begins to move. The first thing the Kongs will pass is a curved shaped trail of Bananas with a Banana Bunch in the center all of which are in the air, which the Kongs can grab by jumping (note: the Kongs can jump off of their Minecart). The path then goes down a small curve. The Kongs will then find another trail of Bananas, this time, with the letter K of the K-O-N-G Letters, which is also in the air, like the previous one. The Kongs can jump to grab these, however, two Squeeklies fly through the area at this point. Shortly after this, the Kongs will come up to a wooden barrier blocking the edge of the track, in which the Minecart will crash into and break, however, there is a trail of Bananas that leads to a Barrel Cannon, which has a Banana Coin behind it. When the Kongs are directly beneath the trail of Bananas, they can jump to enter the Barrel Cannon (and collect the Bananas), which aims directly at a moving Auto-Fire Barrel, which moves up and down. Timing this correctly, the apes can fire themselves through the Banana Coin (they will collect it) and into the Auto-Fire Barrel, which fires the apes to a small wooden floor. There is a floor beneath it, where the Tutorial Pig hosts the checkpoint, however, as soon as the apes land on this wooden floor, it breaks, dropping the Kongs onto the floor with the Tutorial Pig and the first checkpoint. Ahead of the apes are five wooden platforms connected to each other with construction markings on them, four of which hold Banana Bunches on them, and the center one holds a Banana Coin on top of it. However, these platforms tremble and collapse as soon as the Kongs land on them, but luckily for them, there is a floor beneath them that holds a strange brown plant that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely, as well as an opening on its left that can take the Kongs into a Bonus Room. After this floor, the heroes can jump to a trio of these trembling platforms connected to each other, and quickly jump to another trembling platform. Here, the duo must quickly jump onto the next trembling platform after this, and then jump onto the last trembling platform after that platform. Here, the Kongs can jump into a Barrel Cannon, which fires them to an awaiting Minecart. As soon as the Minecart moves, it doesn't take long for a large falling crystal to break part of the track ahead of them. The Kongs must jump over the gap the crystal created where a Squeekly flies by and the letter O can be found above the track the Minecart lands on. This track is made of a series of platforms with construction marks that fall off as soon as the Minecart rolls over it. A gap is coming up, which has a trail of Bananas with a Banana Bunch in the center over it as well as a Squeekly that flies over the Banana trail. Anyway, the Kongs must jump over this gap with good timing to land on another Minecart on a small floor, which another Squeekly flies over. The platforms fall when the Minecart is landed on, however, there is another gap immediately after the apes land on this Minecart which the Kongs must jump over with good timing while collecting the trail of Banana Bunches over the gap. This floor is just like the previous; the platforms fall off when the Minecart moves over them, and immediately after the apes land on the Minecart, they must jump over a gap with good timing to land on another group of five trembling platforms. There is nothing over the gap the Kongs are about to jump over sadly, except a Squeekly, and the trembling platforms have nothing on them. A Squeekly also flies over them. At the end of the fifth trembling platform, the Kongs can jump into a Barrel Cannon over a gap which fires them onto a Minecart. Here, as the Minecart moves, the platforms forming the track behind the apes fall off. There is a Barrel Cannon in the air shortly after landing on the cart. By the time, the Kongs are about to reach the cannon, the platforms forming the track fall off in front of them as well! The heroes have no choice but to jump into the Barrel Cannon. The Barrel Cannon aims at another Barrel Cannon in the background attached to a rock wall of dynamite. A trail of Bananas forms the cannon's path that the apes will go through when fired. Anyway, after the Cannon fires the Kongs they will land into the next Barrel Cannon. The next Barrel Cannon can then fire the Kongs to an Auto-Fire Barrel also attached to a dynamite wall. When the Kongs are fired, the rock wall the Barrel Cannon is destroyed due to the dynamite exploding, which will happen when the Kongs are fired from every Auto-Fire Barrel/Barrel Cannon attached to a rock wall. Anyway, the Auto-Fire Barrel then fires the apes to another Auto-Fire Barrel, which in turn fires the apes to another Auto-Fire Barrel. The Auto-Fire Barrel then fires the apes onto an awaiting Minecart on a very slightly slanted form of track in the background. The track tilts upward as soon as the Kongs land here, slowing down the Kongs as they travel in the Minecart. Two Banana Bunches are above this track, as well as three Squeeklies, which fly past this track. The Minecart, then reaches the track's tip, where it falls off and into the gap, however, to save their lifes, the apes can jump into an Auto-Fire Barrel on a dynamite rock wall which fires the apes to another Auto-Fire Barrel on a dynamite rock wall. The Auto-Fire Barrel then fires the apes onto another slanted track with an awaiting Minecart on it. The track tilts up a bit, but after a certain point, it tilts downwards, making the Kongs go faster. By the way, a Banana Coin is above this track, and two Squeeklies fly past the track. Anyway, before the apes fall off the track and plummet to their death, they must jump to a group of four trembling platforms connected to each other. The letter N is above these trembling platforms, which can be collected easily, but the Kongs must be careful, not to fall because, the platforms will collapse after being landed on. Anyway, a Barrel Cannon is over a gap attached to a dynamite rock wall after the fourth trembling platform. It can fire the apes into an Auto-Fire Barrel also attached to a dynamite rock wall, which fires the primates into an Auto-Fire Barrel in the foreground. The Auto-Fire Barrel then fires the Kongs onto an awaiting Minecart on a track. As soon as the Minecart moves, part of the track falls off behind them. A Minecart is awaiting on a track ahead. When the Kongs near the cart, part of the track in front of them falls off too! When the Kongs jump on this Minecart and it moves, just like with the previous two, part of the track behind them falls off. An Auto-Fire Barrel attached a dynamite rock wall is ahead. When the Kongs near the Auto-Fire Barrel...IT' DOES IT AGAIN!!! Part of the track in front of them falls off too. The Kongs must quickly jump into the Auto-Fire Barrel, which fires them to another Auto-Fire Barrel attached to a dynamite rock wall. This Barrel, in turn, fires the apes to one last Auto-Fire Barrel attached to a dynamite rock wall. The Barrel fires them into a rock wall, where the apes fall and land on some wooden floors, breaking them. After breaking two floors, the apes land on a group of five trembling platforms connected to each other. However, this time, the trembling platforms can be useful. There is an Auto-Fire Barrel that can fire the apes into a second Bonus Room beneath the platforms. At the right point, the Kongs can let the platforms collapse, where the heroes will fall into the Barrel and be blasted into the Bonus Room. Anyway, ahead of these trembling platforms is a small floor with four Bananas and a strange brown plant that can be pounded on for a prize, most likely, can be found. A skull Barrel Cannon is over a gap ahead of this small floor (skull Barrel Cannons/ Auto-Fire Barrels destroy themselves (explode) after firing the Kongs). It can fire the Kongs onto another awaiting Minecart on its track. The track does not tilt of fall off, just so you know, however, the apes must soon jump to another skull Barrel Cannon over the gap. The Barrel Cannon then fires the Kongs onto an awaiting Minecart on its track above the first track the Kongs were just on. The Kongs will pass four Auto-Fire Barrels (one is before the Minecart), with Bananas and Banana Coins in their firing paths. The end of the track is coming up and the apes have two choices. The heroes can jump into the Auto-Fire Barrel above the gap, or jump onto a trembling platform with a Puzzle Piece on it and then quickly jump into the first Auto-Fire Barrel. The Auto-Fire Barrel then fires the apes to another Auto-Fire Barrel, which fires the apes to ANOTHER AUTO-FIRE BARREL! This Auto-Fire Barrel fires the Kongs to ONE MORE AUTO-FIRE BARREL!!! Good gosh, how long would this keep going! Not for long, in fact, this Auto-Fire Barrel fires the Kongs onto an awaiting Minecart on its track. Shortly after landing on the Minecart, it approaches a curved slope part of the track with an Auto-Fire Barrel that the Kongs can jump to. The Barrel can fire the Kongs into some Bananas and the letter G before they land back on the Minecart. Shortly after landing, the apes can jump to a small platform with the Slot Machine Barrel above it. When the Slot Machine Barrel is hit, the level is complete.
- K: When the Kongs start out riding in a Minecart, they come up to a group of Bananas floating in the air in a curved shape. The letter K is between them and can be reached if the Kongs jump with the correct timing.
- O: Shortly after the primates get on the first Minecart after the checkpoint, a large falling crystal smashes part of the track, creating a gap. The Kongs can find the letter O immediately after it in the air; it can be reached with a jump.
- N: After the Kongs jump away from the second tilting track, they can jump onto four trembling platforms. The letter N is above them, and can be reached with a simple jump. However, the apes must be careful not to fall to their doom.
- G: When the apes ride in the final Minecart before the Slot Machine Barrel, they can find an Auto-Fire Barrel that can blast them to some Bananas and the letter G.
- At the beginning of the level, the Kongs into the floor in the background and head left into the hole of a large tree. They are immediately shot out of the hole by a Barrel Cannon, along with the first Puzzle Piece.
- At the rock wall that has the wooden platforms the Kongs must climb up, the Kongs can head straight into the rock to find a Puzzle Piece inside.
- Immediately after the checkpoint, the Kongs can take the trembling platforms down to a lower floor and head left to enter a Bonus Room. Here, the Kongs must use a bouncy moving trampoline to reach many moving Bananas, Banana Bunches and Banana Coins moving at different speeds in a circular motion. If everything is collected within the time limit of thirty seconds, a Puzzle Piece is rewarded, which the Kongs can simply bounce to.
- As soon as the Kongs are fired through the last Auto-Fire Barrel, they are fired into a wall and fall. At the bottom, there is an Auto-Fire Barrel underneath a group of five trembling platforms. If the Kongs let the platforms collapse at the right place, they will land in the Auto-Fire Barrel which fires them into a second Bonus Room. Here the apes must collect 60 Bananas, two Banana Coins and an Extra Life Balloon around some small platforms. If the Kongs collect everything within the time limit of thirty seconds, a Puzzle Piece is rewarded.
- At the second-to-last Minecart track, the Kongs can jump to a trembling platform with the fifth and final Puzzle Piece on it, instead of the Auto-Fire Barrel first, then jump to the Auto-Fire Barrel.
