The Kongs run on a conveyor belt platform with the letter O (as seen in the picture) above it in Slammin' Steel.

Slammin' Steel is the forty-eighth level of Donkey Kong Country Returns, as well as the second level of the Factory. The entire level takes place inside a factory where there are many pieces of golden steel machinery constantly pounding the ceiling, floor, and walls. The bulk of the level has this golden steel machinery that crushes the Kongs (Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong) if they get caught in it, making them lose a Heart. The steel machinery can smash the Kongs into floors, ceilings and even walls. Most of these steel machinery are quite thin and cylinder-shaped, however, the level also features some very large and wide ones too, which have spaces in them due to their size. Also, conveyor belts are a common sight in this level, with many Electroids on them, which prove to be nuisances. The only other type of enemy besides Electroids in the level are Buckbots. In Time Attack mode, a time of 1:32:00 is needed to get a gold medal, a time of 1:40:00 for a silver medal, and a time of 2:13:00 for a bronze medal.

Overview

640px-SlamminSteel165-1-

The Kongs wait for a golden piece of steel machinery to rise up, after it smashes onto the platform ahead of them. This type of steel machinery is the thin type, however the apes will encounter the bigger ones soon. Also, this is at the beginning of the level and this is the first piece of steel machinery in the level.

The level begins with the Kongs landing on a floor. A lamp is above the Kongs slightly to the right. If the apes jump to it, they will hit it, causing a collectible to come out, most likely. The Kongs can go on further to find a blue object on a stand and a Buckbot. The apes can defeat the Buckbot with a jump, however the blue object should really have all eyes. You see, if the Kongs pound this blue object, it jumps out it stand and explodes, causing it to release a collectible, most likely. So, this is the Factory's poundable object, just like how strange plants are the poundable objects of the Jungle and the Forest, urns are the poundable objects for the Ruins, Treasure Chests are the poundable objects for the Beach and so on. There is another lamp that can be jumped to for a collectible, most likely. Immediately after this lamp is a gap. A gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery is pounding constantly on a platform that the apes can jump to. The Kongs should first let this piece of steel machinery pound on the platform. When the cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery rises back up, the heroes should jump on the platform. Hey, the steel machinery act just like the behavior of Thwomps and Super Thwomps! Anyway, a conveyor belt with a trail of Bananas, two magnets with propellers attached to them that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely, and a lamp that can be jumped to for a collectible, most likely above it is after this platform and the first piece of steel machinery in the level. The conveyor belt is moving the opposite direction of the Kongs, so if the Kongs had to stand still on it, they will be moving backwards. It's much like trying to go against gravity, which in real life you can't, however it is still two opposing forces. Anyway, the apes can quickly jump onto this conveyor belt. If they keep moving forward on this platform, they can reach the end. Another conveyor belt can be seen after this first conveyor belt the apes are on, and it holds another gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery on it as well as a strange light bulb-like object with a propeller. It would be easy to jump here, if there wasn't an Electroid between the conveyor belt the apes are on and the next conveyor belt that constantly stretches itself up and down. So, the Kongs must wait for the Electroid to lower its body and second head to a point where they can jump over it. When it does so, the Kongs can jump onto the next conveyor belt. The conveyor belt is moving the direction with the Kongs, making them move forward when standing still, even without pressing the button to move. So, if the Kongs stand still here, they will be dragged to and under the piece of steel machinery that is found here. This can be dangerous, for when the apes want to quickly run backward to avoid being crushed on the conveyor belt, they probably won't make it in time due to the conveyor belt moving the opposite direction of them now. However, what is all eyes on this conveyor belt is that strange, light-bulb-like object with a propeller attached to it. The Kongs should blow this strange object. The light bulb will light up to a very bright point, no, not bright enough to make you have to take your eyes off the screen due to the light, but to the brightest it can go. Also, the propeller starts spinning rapidly. Then the propeller pops off, destroying the light bulb and revealing a collectible, most likely. Anyway, now the Kongs can focus on the piece of steel machinery here. They should first wait for the object to pound the conveyor belt, while trying to not get under it. When the piece of steel machinery rises up, the apes have two routes to take to get outta here before they get crushed. If the Kongs roll-jump, they can head off this conveyor belt and onto a high platform above a lower one with a space in it. There is a Puzzle Piece on this high platform. Anyway, if the Kongs take the lower route, they can simply jump to the lower platform. A DK Barrel is found here. Not too much after the DK Barrel is a large space in the platform that holds another gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery. However, this piece of steel machinery is pointing up, meaning that it will slam into the base of the higher platform with the Puzzle Piece on it. Steel machinery that point up slam onto ceilings. The heroes should wait for this piece of steel machinery to slam onto the base of the high platform with the Puzzle Piece. Now, in the opposite fashion of the pieces of steel machinery that point down, which slam onto floors/the tops of conveyor belts, the apes can jump over the large space safely, onto the other half of the floor. A Buckbot and a blue object on its stand that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely, is here. Immediately after this blue object on the stand, the apes can see a platform with a gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery on it. A trail of two Bananas and the letter K of the K-O-N-G Letters on top of them are squeezed in a tight space between this piece of steel machinery and another one after it. So, first of all, it is recommended to defeat the Buckbot where the Kongs are so that they don't have to worry about being hurt. The apes should now wait for the first piece of steel machinery to pound the platform ahead of them. When it rises back up, the heroes should jump to the platform it slams into and stand in the safe spot: the tight space with the trail of two Bananas and the letter K. Here, the apes must now wait on the piece of steel machinery in front of them, which is pointing up, to slam onto the ceiling above them. Now, when this piece of steel machinery lowers enough, the apes can walk on it. A small conveyor belt is after this piece of steel machinery, and it holds a magnet attached to a propeller that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely, on its edge, as well as a lamp that can be jumped to for a collectible, most likely. This conveyor belt is moving the opposite direction of the Kongs, which pushes the apes backwards if they stand still on it. Quickly, the apes should jump to this conveyor belt. Here, the apes can see the end of the conveyor belt, due to its puny size. A gap is after this conveyor belt, and it holds an Electroid that stretches itself up and down. Another, larger conveyor belt is after this gap with the Electroid, and it moves forward, which pushes the Kongs forward if they stand still on it. Now, as the apes are being pushed back, the apes should wait on the Electroid to lower itself enought to jump over. When the enemy does so, the Kongs can jump onto the next conveyor belt, which is above them slightly to the right. A single-headed Electroid is here, which the Kongs must jump over as the conveyor belt pushes them forward. Shortly after the single-headed Electroid, there is another gap with another Electroid that stretches itself up and down constantly. A lower, smaller conveyor belt with a Buckbot and a lamp that can be jumped to for a collectible, most likely, is after the Electroid. It is also positioned to below the conveyor belt the apes are on slightly to the right. So, the Kongs should wait for the Electroid to lower itself enough to jump over while fighting against the conveyor belt to prevent falling into it and the gap below. Ha, losing a Heart and an Extra Life Balloon! Anyway, when the Electroid lowers itself enough, the Kongs can jump to this next conveyor belt with the Buckbot on it. They should try to land on the enemy to get rid of it. After this, the apes can jump over a small gap onto a larger conveyor belt. Two higher platforms connected to each other by chains that both hold a trail of four Bananas and a light bulb attached to a propeller that can be blown on for a collectible are above this conveyor belt. One of the light bulbs, the light bulb on the right, can be blown on for a Puzzle Piece. There are also two Electroids, this time, pointing horizontally, one underneath each of the two higher platforms, and they move up and down. Also two Buckbots walks on this conveyor belt. The letter O is between the two higher platforms. The letter O can be reached with a high bounce off a Buckbot; the same goes for the higher platforms. Looks like it was all in twos except for the letter O, where there was just one letter. Also, the conveyor belt moves in the opposite direction of forward, meaning that if the Kongs stand still on it, they will be pushed backward. The Kongs should carefully reach the end of the floor (even though it is my, Smashbro8's, opinion, it is a good idea to roll here). After carefully passing the Electroids and reaching the end of the floor, the apes can find a very small platform that they can jump to. This platform can be used to reach the higher platforms on the conveyor belt before it if they roll-jump off it. Anyway on this puny platform (Good Lord! It is so puny! Watch your step here!), the apes can see another gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery pound on a platform and rise back up. They should let the piece of machinery pound the platform once more. Now when it rises back up, the apes should quickly jump on the platform. Here, they can quickly jump over a gap with a Banana Bunch onto another platform that is slammed onto by another gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery. The steel piece of machinery is also rising back up so the apes should quickly jump over a second gap with a Banana Bunch onto a third platform that is slammed onto by a third gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery. This third piece of steel machinery is also rising back up. Quickly, the apes should jump off the platform it slams onto, onto another platform that holds the Tutorial Pig, who hosts the first checkpoint, and a lamp that can be jumped to for a collectible, most likely above it. So, what the Kongs just went through before landing on this platform with the first checkpoint was a group of three gold, cylinder-shaped pieces of steel machinery that pound and rise up one after another. Anyway, after the checkpoint, there is a gap with small conveyor belt that is being pounded on constantly by another gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery. The Kongs should wait for the piece of steel machinery to pound the platform. When it rises back up the Kongs should jump on this conveyor belt. Another gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery that points up is lowering down from here, which the Kongs can jump to. Another small conveyor belt platform that has a gold, cylinder-shaped piece of machinery on it is after this second piece of steel machinery. It also rises back up. The apes can jump here. BUT!! If the apes let the second piece of steel machinery pound, instead of being crushed into a ceiling, the apes are sent to a high floor with many Bananas above it. The next piece of steel machinery's top can be seen here. The apes can quickly roll-jump over it onto another area full of Bananas. The Kongs must be quick, for if they caught when the steel piece of machinery moves all the way up, they won't lose a life, THEY'D LOSE AN EXTRA LIFE BALLOON!!! On this other side full of Bananas, there is a thin higher platform, and a lower platform. At the end of the lower platform is a Puzzle Piece. If the apes drop here, they can collect the Puzzle Piece, as well as any Bananas on the floor. Immediately after the Puzzle Piece, the apes can jump out of here onto a lower conveyor belt platform with a Buckbot, a magnet attached to a propeller that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely, and a lamp that can be jumped to for a collectible, most likely. Also, if the Kongs refuse to collect this Puzzle Piece and ignore it, they can jump onto the next platform since its gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery is rising (most likely, if not wait on it to slam down and rise up again, then jump on the platform). Here, they can then jump onto a very small platform that holds nothing but a DK Barrel. Here, the Kongs can then jump to this conveyor belt. Either way, the heroes end up on this conveyor belt which moves forward. Ahead of the apes is a HUMONGOUS and WIDE gold piece of steel machinery that slams down onto a LONG floor. It is so wide that the entire thing cannot be seen on the tv screen at once from front to end. How are we supposed to get past that thing without dying?! Well, this piece of steel machinery has spaces in it however. So the objective for the Kongs is to hide in the spaces before it slams back down again. The apes, on the conveyor belt, should let this giant piece of steel machinery slam down onto the ground. When it rises back up again, the apes should quickly jump to the floor it slams onto. Here, they should quickly run into the first space before the large steel piece of machinery slams down and crushes them. The first space is not too far from the front part of this piece of steel machinery, meaning once the apes land on the platform it slams onto, it isn't much movement before they reach the first space. The first space holds two Bananas in it. In this safe first space, the apes should wait for the piece of steel machinery to slam down and rise up again. When it rises up, the apes should roll to the next space quickly. BUT!!! Just before the second space, there is a cracked piece of floor. If the apes quickly pound this floor before they get smashed, they can break it and fall into a Bonus Room. The Kongs should stop in this second space, which holds two Banana Bunches. Here, the Kongs should wait for the giant piece of steel machinery to slam down again and rise back up. When it rises back up, the heroes should roll to the next space.

The Kongs hide under the last space in the first giant, golden piece of steel machinery in the level.

This space is right next to the end of the large piece of steel machinery, and a conveyor belt with a light bulb that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely, follows it. The Kongs should wait for this giant piece of steel machinery to slam down onto the floor and rise back up. When it rises back up, the apes can jump to the conveyor belt. Well, it's more than it looked while in the space now we've jumped here! It turns out there are three Bananas on it, as well as another, smaller, conveyor belt above this one, which holds an Electroid that moves left to right on it. To the left of the Electroid is a Banana Bunch in midair. Anyway, on this first conveyor belt, the apes should wait for the Electroid to move away from the side they must jump onto on the higher conveyor belt, which is to the right. They must do this while trying to stay on the conveyor belt as it pushes them into an Electroid over the gap ahead. Anyway, when the Electroid moves away, the apes should jump on top of the higher conveyor belt. A conveyor belt with three magnets attached to propellers that can be blown on for a collectible (s), most likely, is above this higher conveyor belt to the right. It is right above the gap with the Electroid in it. The apes should quickly jump here before the Electroid zaps them, for if they stand still on the higher conveyor, they will be pushed backwards into it. On this conveyor belt, which will push the Kongs forward if they stand still, the apes can perform one of three moves to continue. The apes can jump to a small conveyor belt that is above a lower, larger one, which (the small conveyor belt) holds an Electroid that moves left to right on it, or they can drop to the larger conveyor belt which has a Buckbot, a trail of three Bananas, and a light bulb that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely on it. Wait, well that's not three, that's two routes/choices!! BUT!!! If the apes roll-jump off the conveyor belt they are on, they can hover to the letter N, which is right after the Electroid on the small conveyor belt below, and then land on the lower, larger conveyor belt with the Buckbot, etc. If the apes decide to jump to the small conveyor belt with the Electroid, they must do this when the Electroid is moving away from the left side of it, then jump drop onto the lower, larger conveyor belt. Also, by the way, the small conveyor belt with the Electroid on it here pushes the Kongs forward, while the lower, larger conveyor belt pushes the Kongs backwards. Another giant, gold piece of steel machinery that is as big or even bigger and wider than the first one is after this large conveyor belt. Also, unlike the first one, this giant piece of steel machinery is pointing up, meaning it slams into the ceiling. Once again, the Kongs must hide in spaces, for the piece of steel machinery is too large and wide for the Kongs to get past by running/rolling without being crushed. However, some of the spaces here have electrical circuits in them, making this one a little more challenging than the first one. The electrical currents can electrocute the Kongs if they land into them, making them lose a Heart, much like touching any other dangerous obstacle or enemy. So, first the apes should get rid of the Buckbot on this large conveyor belt so that they don't have to worry about being hurt while waiting on the giant piece of steel machinery to slam down. After this has been done, they should wait for the giant piece of steel machinery to slam down and rise back up, while trying to avoid being pushed backwards by the conveyor belt. When the giant piece of steel machinery lowers, the apes should jump onto it and quickly run into the first space, which isn't too far. It is located in the ceiling. Here, they should wait for the giant piece of steel machinery to slam back onto the ceiling and lower back down. When it lowers enough (which should be as soon as it starts to lower), the apes should begin rolling to the second space in this giant piece of steel machinery. The apes should jump over a space with an electrical current in it, pass another space with an electrical current in the ceiling shortly after this first space with the first electrical current and stop at the second space, which is also in the ceiling. Well, all spaces are in the ceilings here, for if they were in the giant piece of steel machinery, the Kongs will get smashed. Anyway, in the second space, the apes should wait patiently for the giant piece of steel machinery to slam onto the ceiling and lower. When it lowers enough (which should be as soon as it starts to lower) the apes should start rolling. They must roll-jump over two spaces with electrical currents in them in the giant piece of steel machinery, with another space with an electrical current in the ceiling between them. The apes should roll-jump over the second space with the electrical current in it from the second safe space to head past the giant piece of steel machinery's end. Here, they can head onto a platform with the Tutorial Pig hosting the second checkpoint. After the checkpoint, there is
640px-SlamminSteel365-1-

The Kongs reach and land on a conveyor belt that holds four Electroids. These Electroids constantly attach and detach themselves while the conveyor belt moves the opposite direction of forward (in which, the Kongs are heading). So, the Kongs must get past these four Electroids safely while trying to avoid being pushed backwards by the conveyor belt.

a conveyor belt that holds four Electroids, that appear to be single and separate. However, these Electroids constantly pair themselves together and detach themselves as they move left to right. They pair themselves together with a long string of purple electricity, just like with the previous Electroids in the level. The apes can jump to this conveyor belt and carefully jump through the Electroids as soon as they detach themselves from one another. They must be careful for the conveyor belt is also pushing them backwards here. After this conveyor belt with the four Electroids that constantly attach and detach themselves from one another, there is a separate, smaller conveyor belt that holds a light bulb that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely, above it slightly to the right. The Kongs can jump here. A solid platform is above them, however, it is right by a wall. A gold, cylinder-piece of steel machinery is to the left of the wall and points right at it. So, if the Kongs had to jump on this platform at the wrong time, they would get smashed into it. This is the first piece of steel machinery to smash walls instead of floors and ceilings. Anyway, while standing on this conveyor belt that is pushing them backwards, the Kongs should wait patiently for this piece of steel machinery to slam onto the wall and move back into place. When it moves back, the heroes should jump on the platform above them. Here, they can jump to an even higher platform squeezed between two walls that are safe. This platform is a safe platform, for it is impossible for the apes to get hurt here. A Banana Bunch sits on this safe platform. Above the apes is a floor that ends at a wall. On the opposite side of the wall (which is in the wall to the right) is a gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery that pounds into the wall and moves back in place constantly. On this safe platform, the Kongs should wait patiently for the piece of steel machinery to slam into the wall and move back. When this piece of steel machinery has moved all the way back, since the platform is right underneath the hole it goes back into, the Kongs can jump onto the floor. Here they can run/roll until they reach two platforms separated from each other by a wall. One platform holds a Heart and the other holds a Puzzle Piece. So, the Kongs have two choices. They can take the platform with the Heart, which is closer, or the one with the Puzzle Piece, right after it. Now the Kongs must jump onto one of these platforms quickly before they get smashed into the wall by the piece of steel machinery. Both platforms are safe platforms, so the apes will never get hurt if they stand here. Above the apes is a floor connected to a conveyor belt close to the wall on their right. On the wall to their left, there is another gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery. The apes should wait for the piece of steel machinery to slam into the wall on their right and then move back into place. When it moves back into place, the apes should jump onto the floor, roll onto the conveyor belt and quickly jump onto a safe platform above them that holds a Banana Bunch on it. Above the Kongs are three gold, cylinder-shaped pieces of steel machinery that pound into a wall and move back one after another. So, the Kongs should wait for the first (closest) piece of machinery to head back into the wall, and then jump onto the small floor above them. Quickly, they can jump onto a conveyor belt as the second piece of machinery heads back into its place. Now from here, the apes can jump to a smaller conveyor belt while the third piece of machinery heads back into its place. Here, they can then jump up to a safe platform. There is another platform to the slightly to the right of them above them, however it is the path of another piece of steel machinery that pounds onto the wall on the right. So, if the Kongs had to stand on this platform at the wrong time, they will get pushed off of it by the piece of machinery and be crushed into the wall on their right, making them drop right back down. Wherever, they land, the heroes must repeat the steps to get to this safe platform all over again. So, let's not make that happen. Anyway, the Kongs should wait for this piece of steel machinery to pound the wall on their right and head back. When it heads back, the Kongs should now jump on this next platform. Quickly, they should jump to a safe platform with a Banana Bunch on it above them slightly to the right. Here, the apes can jump to another, larger, safe platform with a Tire attached to some object immediately to the left of it. The letter G is to the left of this Tire. The letter G can be reached if the Kongs jump and hover to it from the left edge of this large safe platform. YAY! However, they must repeat the steps to get back here, which is the sad part. Awww! No, that wasn't the "Awww" as in something being cute, but the "Awww" used in losing, failing, etc. Anyway, the Kongs must use the Tire to bounce high up past two gold, cylinder-shaped pieces of steel machinery, one on each side of the wall, which slam into each other and move back. They will land on a safe platform with a Banana Coin on it. On the Tire (the Kongs will bounce low if they stand still on it; they won't get hurt), the apes should wait for the two pieces of steel machinery to slam into each other and move back. When they move back, the apes should bounce up and land on the safe platform with the Banana Coin. Well, they will land on it regardless. Above the apes is a platform attached to the left wall. On the wall to the right of it is another gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery. The Kongs should wait patiently for this piece of steel machinery to slam into the wall and head back. When it does, they should then jump onto the platform attached to the left wall above them slightly to the left. The Kongs are now in a very tricky area. If they make a wrong move, they can get pushed off a platform here, get crushed, and have to repeat all the steps to get here, due to them falling down from wherever they were. Above them slightly to the right is a platform in the center of the area. Now, on the left wall, there is another gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery. This piece of steel machinery pounds the wall in the order opposite of the previous one, which the apes just passed. So, when the previous piece of steel machinery is slamming, this next one is moving back into place and vice versa. Anyway, the Kongs should wait for this steel piece of machinery to pound, which it is doing now, and head back. When it has move back, the Kongs should now jump on the platform here just before they get crushed by the previous piece of steel machinery. Here, another gold, cylinder-shaped piece of steel machinery will slam into the wall on their left. The platform the Kongs must jump to is above them slightly to the right, close to the hole that the piece of machinery goes back into. When the piece of machinery goes back into its hole, the apes should jump here, just before they get crushed by the previous piece of machinery. They can then quickly jump to another platform above them to their left in the center of the area. Here, the apes should quickly jump up to a large safe platform with four Banana Bunches on it. Do you know what you just did? You have just passed two more gold, cylinder-shaped pieces of steel machinery right before they slam into each other. These two pieces of steel machinery are in walls, one on each wall. Anyway, on this large safe platform with four Bananas. Here, the apes can jump up to a large, safe platform above them. There is the level's Slot Machine Barrel above this platform. The Kongs can jump to it. When it is jumped to and it, the level is complete.

Secrets

K-O-N-G Letters

  • K: The letter K is ina tight space between the two steel pieces of machinery right after the first DK Barrel. The letter K is easy with a jump as soon as they pass the first piece of steel machinery.
  • O: The letter O is between two thin, higher platforms above a long conveyor belt placed just before the first checkpoint. The primates must bounce off of a nearby Buckbot on the long conveyor belt to reach it.
  • N: In the area with the five conveyor belts just before second giant, gold piece of steel machinery with some electrical currents in its spaces, the Kongs can roll-off the third conveyor belt and hover past some lower conveyor belts into the letter N after an Electroid on a lower conveyor belt.
  • G: The letter G is to the left of the Tire close to a large safe platform. If the Kongs jump and hover to the letter G from the large safe platform's edge, they can reach it. However, the apes must repeat the steps to land back onto this large, safe platform.

Puzzle Pieces

  1. SlamminSteel265-1-

The Kongs are about to jump over the next piece of steel machinery to reach the lower floor with the third Puzzle Piece in the hidden area.

The Kongs should roll jump off of the platform right before the DK Barrel to reach a higher platform with a Puzzle Piece on it.
  2. If the Kongs blow on the light bulb on the higher platform after the letter O, a Puzzle Piece appears.
  3. The Kongs should head to the second piece of steel machinery after the first checkpoint and stand on it just before it moves up. When it moves up, they will be sent up to a secret area full of Bananas. The apes can jump over the next piece of steel machinery. Here, they can land on a lower floor with a Puzzle Piece on it. Here, after collecting the Puzzle Piece, the apes can jump onto another platform.
  4. After the first giant, gold piece of machinery moves up, the Kongs can roll to the second space. On the way, close to the second space is a crack in the floor. If the Kongs pound this crack before the giant piece of steel machinery crushes them, they can enter a Bonus Room. Here, they must bounce on a moving trampoline to collect many Bananas and three Banana Coins. If everything is collected within thirty seconds, a Puzzle Piece appears.
  5. In the area with the second piece of steel machinery after the second checkpoint, there is a floor that has two platforms above it. One platform holds a Heart and the other holds a Puzzle Piece. The platform with the Heart is closer, however the Kongs must quickly jump to this platform with the Puzzle Piece in order to collect it.

Trivia

  • This level's theme, as well as the theme in the next level, Handy Hazards (which is the same theme as this level's), is a remix of the theme in Oil Drum Alley in Donkey Kong Country.
