The Star Ball is an item in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. It is a large, transparent, ball with a Power Star in it. In Super Mario Galaxy, the Star Ball is used in the Rolling Green Galaxy, Rolling Gizmo Galaxy, and at the last part of the second Star mission of the Melty Molten Galaxy. The player can control the ball, by jumping on it, and tilting the Wii Remote in the direction you wish to go. Once Mario aboards the Star Ball, it is impossible for him to dismount it. In all three of the Star Ball's appearances, the goal is to get the Star Ball in a hole marked with a yellow flag. The hole is similar to that of a golf hole. To get the ball into the hole, Mario must go through numerous challenges such as going across narrow ledges, going pass moving platforms and more. Once Mario gets the ball in the hole, the ball will explode freeing the Power Star. The Power Star will move itself up the flag, so Mario must climb the flag, in order to get it. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, Star Balls appear in the Rolling Masterpiece Galaxy and the Rolling Coaster Galaxy. They behave the same way they do in Super Mario Galaxy.
