The Kongs on a rock platform with a Bonehead Jed (long-necked skeleton enemy)and a cactus that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely, in Sticky Situation.

Sticky Situation is the thirty-eighth level in Donkey Kong Country Returns, as well as the first level of the Cliff (Donkey Kong Country Returns). The level takes place on a high mountain, where there is tar filling gaps in the rock floors. Many bone platforms seen in this level float in the tar, but they sink with the Kong's (Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong) weight, making them tilt. If the heroes fall into the tar, they are unable to move fast or jump high until the tar falls off them by Ground Pounding. Another major obstacle in this level is its many falling platforms that seem to ride along the tar. The platforms all fall at different speeds, so the heroes have to be careful where they step. Enemies in this level consist of Skellyrexes, Skullyrexes, Bonehead Jeds, and Firehead Neds, who all take a maximum of one (Skullyrex) to two (the other three) hits to defeat. Tiki Zings also make an appearance in this level. In Time Attack mode, a time of 1:03:00 is needed to get a gold medal, a time of 1:16:00 for a silver medal, and a time of 2:03:00 for a bronze medal.

Overview

640px-StickySituation165-1-

The Kongs stand on one of the descending platforms.

The level begins with the Kongs landing on a floor that leads to a dandelion that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely. Shortly after the dandelion, the floor ends. There is a gap with platforms moving along a waterfall of tar in it. A small floor with a Skellyrex walking on it can be seen on the other side of this waterfall of tar. So, using the platforms, the heroes should jump on one of the platforms, and then quickly jump to the small floor before the platform carries the heroes to their death. Also, there is a Banana Bunch that is too high to be reached with a jump above the small floor. If the primates high bounce on the Skellyrex, they can reach the Banana Bunch. Anyway, three waterfalls of tar are in a large gap ahead. The center waterfall of tar holds a platform with a Skullyrex on it, as well as a Banana Bunch above it, which can only be reached with a high bounce on the Skullyrex. Unlike the other two waterfalls of tar, the platform is not descending, nor is anything else in the waterfall but the tar itself. So, to get to this center platform safely, the heroes can either roll-jump here or jump on a platform on the first waterfall and quickly jump here. Here, the apes can see a letter K in midair after the third and last waterfall of tar in this group, as well as part of a wooden platform attached to a floor. Anyway, what's the code to get the letter K? Well, the heroes should watch the platforms on the third waterfall of tar. They should notice that near the letter K, the platforms slow down, and then continue on moving at normal pace (a lot of platforms on waterfalls of tar slow down and continue on at normal pace in Sticky Situation). So, when a platform slows down, the heroes should quickly jump on the platform and jump into the letter K. The heroes will then land on the floor/wooden platform attached to the floor. Anyway, if you decide to ignore the letter K, you can just jump on a platform on the third waterfall of tar and then jump on the wooden platform attached to the floor. Anyway, here, the apes can find a cactus that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely (Cactus are the poundable objects for the Cliff world, just like how Treasure Chests are the poundable objects for the Beach, large and small strange plants are the poundable objects for the Jungle and Forest, urns are the poundable objects for the Ruins, etc), a bone platform floating on a pond of tar, and a trail of Bananas ending with a Banana Bunch that forms an arch between the cactus and bone platform. When the Kongs jump on this bone platform, however, it tilts, and the heroes should also be aware of the Skellyrex walking on it. Also, the Kongs should avoid the tar below, for tar, in every level in the Cliff that it is found in, if it is stepped in, causes the heroes to be unable to run fast or jump high. To get tar off if you do fall in however, isn't that hard depending on the location, for it only takes a Ground Pound to get rid of. But if you are Ground Pounding on a platform sinking into the tar to get rid of the tar on you, then that can be quite a challenge. Anyway, another bone platform with two Skellyrexes can be seen here. The Kongs should jump here. There is a Banana Coin above the bone platform close to the right edge, which needs a high bounce to obtain. Also here on this bone platform, if the heroes let the platform's left edge come up a bit, they can roll-jump and cling onto a hidden, curved, ceiling of grassy turf that is shaped like an S (or if you know math very well, like a cubic function). The camera will zoom out to show the grassy turf and where it leads. It leads to a platform below it that holds a Puzzle Piece and a brown, cracked rock next to it. Once the heroes collect the Puzzle Piece, they can pound on the brown, cracked rock a couple times, to cause it to break and drop the Kongs back onto the bone platform they were on. Hey, just like the cracked wooden objects in the Forest! Anyway, a third bone platform can be seen floating on this pond of tar, and it holds a cactus that can be pounded on for a Heart, most likely, and a Bonehead Jed. When the heroes jump here, the camera zooms back into where it was normally. The Kongs should be careful, for Bonehead Jeds and Firehead Neds ride in a cart (not a Minecart!) and can raise their necks to an incredible height. It's cool, but also damaging if touched. Also, the main difference between Bonehead Jeds and Firehead Neds is that Firehead Neds shoot fireballs while moving (they also have red eyes and a lava cart, unlike Bonehead Jeds). Anyway, a little off here, an arch of Bananas ending with a Banana Bunch that goes over a dandelion that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely (which is located at the very end of the pond of tar), and separates a wooden platform from the bone platform. Anyway, on this wooden platform, an area with five rows of waterfalls of tar can be found (not all five rows can be seen for this area is very wide). Each row's platforms do not descend in a corresponding order. Also, almost every platform holds a Banana Bunch. Also, there is a small platform with spikes on it that separates the fourth and fifth waterfall of tar apart. Anyway, the heroes should carefully try to get through this area. At the end of the area, there is a floor that holds the Tutorial Pig hosting the first checkpoint of the level. After the checkpoint, there isn't much to go before the floor ends with a gap with a waterfall of tar in it. Here, the heroes will find a DK Barrel on a wooden platform above them, as well as a small floor to the right of it that holds a jeopardous ( meaning gotten from thesaurus.com ) Firehead Ned, a cactus that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely, and a Banana Bunch in midair above the small floor, which takes a high bounce to reach. Since the wooden platform with the DK Barrel and the small floor with a nasty Firehead Ned and cactus are both higher than the floor the primates are on, the heroes must climb the descending platforms on the waterfall of tar between them. Here, to defeat the Firehead Ned, the Kongs can either jump to the wooden platform with the DK Barrel and throw the Barrel at this nasty enemy, or jump on it twice. Jumping on it twice is much easier than throwing a DK Barrel at it, for the enemy's fireballs can destroy the Barrel. Anyway, at the end of this small floor which has or has had a Firehead Ned, two waterfalls of tar can be found. There is a stalactite-like rock that separates the two waterfalls of tar, and also blocks half of it. Also, some of the descending waterfalls here hold a Banana Coin. Anyway, the heroes should jump on a descending platform on the first waterfall of tar. When the platform gets low enough (lower than the stalactite-like rock), the Kongs should jump to a platform on the next waterfall of tar (as long as it isn't too low, low enough to kill you). Here, the Kongs can quickly jump to a small floor with two Skullyrexes and a dandelion that can be blown on for a collectible, most likely. Two more waterfalls of tar are found after this small floor. The Kongs must climb these descending platforms on the tar to reach a floor with a dandelion that can be blown on that leads to a slope, all of which is in a large, fossilized dinosaur's mouth, however, some platforms carry Skellyrexes, who walk on them. So, the Kongs should carefully jump from one platform on one waterfall of tar to a platform on the other waterfall of tar and repeat until they are able to jump or roll-jump to the floor in the fossilized dinosaur's mouth. Here on this floor, the apes can roll/slide down the slope to find two Skullyrexes on a wooden platform, as well as a cactus that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. A Barrel Cannon can be seen above a gap. The apes can fire through a trail of Bananas only to land on a bone platform floating on a lake of tar (the reason why it is a lake of tar is that THERE IS A LAKE OF TAR IN THE BACKGROUND!!!) THANK GOD IT ISN'T IN THE FOREGROUND!!! Here, the Kongs can move a little on the bone platform to find another bone platform with three Skullyrexes on it. The heroes should jump here and defeat the Skullyrexes. After this bone platform the apes are on, another bone platform with a higher floor attached to it, which holds a Firehead Ned on it and two Banana Coins above its edges, can be found. The heroes should be careful, for the bone platform tilts in the tar. Anyway, here on this bone platform with the higher floor attached to it, the heroes should first defeat the Firehead Ned. A wooden floor can be seen that has two Skellyrexes walking on it. The heroes can jump here. Near the end of this wooden floor, a Barrel on a very high stand can be found. Right below this stand below the wooden floor is the letter O. How to get the letter O? The Kongs should head backwards and drop down into the tar between the bone platform with the higher floor attached to it and wooden floor. Now, the heroes should jump while moving right in the tar to prevent them from sinking and losing an Extra Life Balloon. Soon, the heroes will reach the letter O on a floor. Once it is collected, the heroes can move back onto the wooden floor. At the end of the wooden floor, the heroes can fall to a smaller wooden platform, then drop to a medium-sized floor with a Firehead Ned, and a cactus that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. Shortly after the cactus, there is a gap that holds two waterfalls of tar. The heroes must use the waterfalls' descending platforms to climb up the cliff and reach a floor to the right that holds the Tutorial Pig hosting the second checkpoint and a dandelion that can be blown on. Also, an Extra Life Balloon floats upward in this area. After the second checkpoint, the heroes will find a Barrel Cannon over a gap. The apes should jump inside this Barrel Cannon. This Barrel Cannon aims upward. The objective for the heroes is to fire over some spikes on a skinny piece of rock while avoiding a Tiki Zing orbiting the spikes in an oval-shaped path. Cautiously, the apes should fire and head right to enter another Barrel Cannon, while collecting an arch of Bananas. Inside this next Barrel Cannon, the heroes can fire onto a small floor with a cactus that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely, and two Skullyrexes. At the end of this floor, there is a Barrel Cannon over a gap. The heroes should jump inside this Barrel Cannon. Inside here, the heroes must fire over a group of spikes into another Barrel Cannon, while two Tiki Zings orbit the spikes. The letter N is next to a wall on the left of the spikes. If the heroes fire and move left, they can collect the letter N and land back onto the previous small floor. They can then jump back inside the Barrel Cannon and carefully fire to the next Barrel Cannon. In this Barrel Cannon, all the apes must do is fire to a Barrel Cannon in the air slightly to the right. Yeah, it sounds easy....BUT! The heroes have to watch out for the two Tiki Zings circling the spikes close to the previous Barrel Cannon, as well as a Tiki Zing on a new set of spikes on a skinny rock to their right. So, that's DOUBLE WATCHING!! Anyway, when all Tiki Zings are out of the way, the primates should quickly fire and move right to enter the next Barrel Cannon. The apes can then fire through a trail of Bananas and land on a floor that leads in a fossilized dinosaur's mouth (right inside what would've been the inside of the fossilized creature's neck/esophagus is actually a gap that takes the Kongs to a lower area). There is a large hole in a wall behind the top of the fossilized creature's head that the heroes can roll-jump into to enter a Bonus Room. However, this Bonus Room isn't well hidden for the curious players out there, for a zebra, which is an animal buddy, can be seen standing from it. It will hide when the heroes get close, often telling the curious ones to get inside that hole and follow it! If the heroes ignore the large hole and decide to go down the creature's neck, they will fall through some Bananas, and slide down close to a wooden platform with a cactus that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. Immediately after the cactus on the wooden platform is a VAST (very large, very wide in range; meaning gotten from thesaurus.com ) gap that holds eight waterfalls of tar! YOU MEAN THAT WE NOW HAVE TO GO THROUGH EIGHT WATERFALLS OF TAR WITHOUT DYING?!!!! Yep, that's the case, and there's no way to get to the level's exit without crossing this. Many collectibles can be found here: Banana Bunches, Banana Coins, an Extra Life Balloon slowly floating upward between the first and second waterfall of tar, a letter G on a descending platform close to the bottom of the gap on the third waterfall of tar, two Puzzle Pieces (one is in a cactus on a descending platform), a special Banana Bunch, even Skellyrexes! Wait, well Skellyrexes aren't collectibles! They're enemies!! Yep, it's okay for you to collect many of the mentioned collectibles as long as the Kongs avoid to things: the Skellyrexes and DEATH. Anyway, some spikes on a skinny rock can be found between the seventh and eighth waterfall of tar. On a descending platform on the eighth waterfall of tar, the Kongs can jump to a platform that holds two Skullyrexes on it, as well as a Barrel Cannon over a gap behind it. The heroes should enter this gap, which aims upward at a trail of Bananas. It fires the apes to a floor with a wooden platform attached to two ropes (not identical to those in the Forest) that holds a Puzzle Piece. Also, a bone platform holding three Skullyrexes on it, tilts in a pond of tar. The bone platform has two platforms attached to its edges above it. The level's Slot Machine Barrel can be found high in midair above the platform attached to the bone platform's right edge, and it looks like it is an inch or two to the right. Now, even though this is my, Smashbro8's opinion, this Slot Machine Barrel is quite a challenge to reach. Even though it isn't too hard to reach, it still takes a lot more work than many of the many previous levels' Slot Machine Barrels. The trick is to let the Kongs defeat all three Skullyrexes on the bone platform, which isn't that easy. Then, the Kongs should let the bone platform tilt to the left, making its right edge point up. Then, the Kongs should quickly jump on the higher, attached platform on the bone platform's left edge, and then jump to the high attached platform on the right (both platforms are at the same length, neither of the two is higher or lower than the other). Here on the higher attached platform on the right, the heroes should not jump. If done correctly, they would end up busting or beating (if you are lucky and you get a DK symbol) the Slot Machine Barrel. Once this is done, the level is complete!

Secrets

K-O-N-G Letters

  • K: If the Kongs jump off of a platform on the second waterfall of tar before it moves too low, they can reach the letter K high in the air above a floor.
  • O:
    640px-StickySituation-O-DKCR-1-

The Kongs jump through the tar to reach the letter O underneath the wooden bridge/floor.

The letter O is underneath the wooden bridge (or floor, whatever you want to call it). To reach it, the Kongs should head backwards (or head to) to the gap that separates the bone platform and wooden bridge/floor. The heroes should fall down the gap into the tar and jump repeatedly to the right until they reach the letter O.
  • N: In an area where the heroes must fire through a Barrel Cannon while avoiding two Tiki Zings circling a group of spikes, the letter N can be seen next to a wall on the left. If the heroes fire and move left instead of right, they can collect the letter N and land back onto a small floor that holds some Skullyrexes. They can then continue on.
  • G: In the TREMENDOUS gap of eight waterfalls of tar (which is also the last group of waterfalls of tar and their descending platforms), the letter G can be found on a descending platform on the third waterfall of tar. The Kongs must be quick to grab it because the platform with the letter is not far from the bottom of the gap!

Puzzle Pieces

  1. 640px-StickySituation265-1-

The heroes climb along the grassy turf to reach the first Puzzle Piece of the level. Why is the piece so dull? This is the look of a transparent (already collected) Puzzle Piece.

On the second bone platform in the pond of tar, which holds some Skullyrexes, the heroes should walk to its right to tilt it. This causes the left side to rise. If the heroes roll-jump off this side of the bone platform, they can reach some green, grassy turf that they can cling onto and follow to reach a Puzzle Piece on a platform below. After the Puzzle Piece is collected, the heroes can then pound on a brown, cracked rock a couple times to land back onto the brown platform.
  2. When the heroes approach the first Barrel Cannon in the level, they should drop off the wooden bridge under it to find a hidden area on the other side of a pit of tar. A brown, cracked rock is here that they can smash to enter an alcove with the Puzzle Piece in it.
  3. On the waterfall of tar just before the second checkpoint, the Kongs should slowly descend to the bottom of the area on a descending platform to spot a Puzzle Piece hidden behind some smoke.
  4. After the second checkpoint, there is a dandelion that can be blown on for a Puzzle Piece.
  5. On the platform just after the letter N, the heroes should roll-jump off of the ledge to reach another platform on the other side of the area. Here, there is a Barrel Cannon that can shoot them into another Barrel Cannon in the background. This Barrel Cannon then shoots the heroes to another Puzzle Piece.
  6. On the floor with the fossilized dinosaur's skull after the letter N, there is a large hole with a zebra peeking out of it behind the fossilized creature's skull. If the heroes roll and jump (roll-jump) into this hole, they will enter a Bonus Room. Here, the heroes must shoot between four Barrel Cannons to collect sixty-five Bananas, three Banana Coins, and an Extra Life Balloon. If everything is collected within thirty seconds, a Puzzle Piece appears that they can shoot to.
  7. In the fifth waterfall of tar of the GIGANTIC gap of eight waterfalls of tar, the Kongs can find a Puzzle Piece on one of the descending platforms after the letter G. The heroes should grab it before the piece leaves the screen.
  8. Also in the COLOSSAL gap of eight waterfalls of tar, the heroes will find a cactus on the final descending platform of the level. If the cactus is pounded on, a Puzzle Piece is revealed.
  9. In the area with the Slot Machine Barrel, a wooden platform with a Puzzle Piece on it can be found high in the air. Probably with the use of the bone platform nearby can help the Kongs reach it.
