Swoopers are bat enemies that appear in Super Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Party 8, Super Paper Mario and Super Mario Galaxy 2. They are usually blue in color. Swoopers attack by falling off a ceiling when a player nears them, and hurts them if he comes in contact with them. In Super Mario Galaxy, Swoopers are brown and swoop at Mario/Luigi when he nears them. There is also a cyan, ice version of Swoopers known as Ice Bats freeze Mario/Luigi when he comes in contact with them. The only way to defeat them is by throwing Fireballs as Fire Mario or Fire Luigi. Ice Bats appear in the Freezeflame Galaxy. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, Swoopers behave the same way they did in Super Mario Galaxy. They appear in galaxies such as the Slimy Spring Galaxy. Ice Bats do not appear in this game. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Swoopers are blue, and appear in caves like in other Mario games. They behave the same way as in other games, which is swooping at the players. In Mario Kart Wii, Swoopers appear in Wario's Gold Mine and Dry Dry Ruins. They run on the ground, which can put players to a stop when coming in contact with them. However, players can wipe out the bats by throwing a Shell at them, or running into them with the power of Star. In Mario Party 8, they only appear as a cameo. They appear on the wrapper of the Vampire Candy. However, they look like the Super Mario 64 version of Swoopers. In Super Paper Mario, Swoopers are found in Gloam Valley and Merlee's Mansion of Chapter 2. Swoopers can be found in Gloam Valley in a secret area. To get here, use a Dimension Flip and fall into an accessible hole near the Star Block. Swoopers' Catch Card, along with the Shlurps Catch Card, can be found here. Swoopers are also found in the line-of-coins trap in Merlee's Mansion. Swoopers also appear in Mario Party 9. They appear flying around the background of the Boo's Horror Castle board. They also appear flying in the background during the minigame, Chain Event when the player slides down the chains.
