Fox in midair in The Swamp.

The Swamp is the eighteenth level in The Subspace Emissary. It is a large level. Bullet Bills are the most common enemies in the entire level, however most enemies that appear in this level are Bowser's soldiers. All the enemies in this level have appeared in a previous level. The Swamp has many features. It features large leaf platforms that fall by the player's weight, wooden platforms attached to a vine that swing side to side, Wind which blows either upward or downward, spike top logs which first appeared in The Ruined Zoo, brick/concrete platforms that move side to side, and spiked plants that attack from the water. The Swamp is the last level in The Subspace Emissary to have the main enemies as Bowser's minions, however, that does not mean that they do not appear in The Great Maze.


Plot

When the player plays this level for the first time, the first cutscene plays, showing Fox and Diddy Kong battling through the swamp. After making it through part of the swamp, Diddy and Fox are walking and talking, but unexpectedly, a black arrow is shot through Diddy, turning him into a Trophy. Fox turns and sees Bowser holding a Dark Cannon, in which he shoots at Fox. However, Fox slides and dodges, while Bowser points to Diddy's trophy. Shadow Bugs begin to devour the trophy. Fox looks at this in a surprised state, and then turns and looks at Bowser, who is ready to make another shot at Fox. Blasts are shot at Bowser, who seems to almost trip. An Arwing flies overhead, and Falco ejects himself from it. He lands, and dashes up to Bowser (he probably uses Falco Phantasm, for the sound heard when Falco does this sounds like it). Falco kicks the Dark Cannon upwards and performs a flip, and while falling, he shoots at the Cannon with his Blasters. The Cannon is destroyed. Bowser jumps backward, lands in his Koopa Clown Car (which is not seen) and flies away. After this, Shadow Bugs turn Diddy's trophy into False Diddy, who grows larger and larger. Fox revives Diddy's trophy, and a boss battle starts against Giant False Diddy. After winning, Diddy cheers, and Falco walks away. Diddy drags him back and tries to tell him what is happening, but Falco, once again, walks away. Diddy grabs him and drags him, just like he did with Fox, away. During that, Fox shrugs. The three continue through the swamp, battling many enemies (of which are mostly Bowser's minions). After making it through the swamp, Diddy, Fox, and Falco, who are standing on top of a waterfall, spot a platform with Primids on it (ascending to the Isle of the Ancients), and Donkey Kong's trophy. Diddy stomps the ground, angry, but Falco glares over towards the other side of the waterfall and the Great Fox appears. Falco then joins your team. When the level is played again, the player can find a red door in the Barrel Cannon area leading to a battle with Jigglypuff. She will dance and prepare to fight. After she is defeated, she is unlocked (if have not yet been unlocked), and joins your team.


Walkthrough

When you begin, you will be on a floor with a river, waterfall, and a few rocks in the river in the background. As you begin moving, you should run down a small hill. You will shortly come across a small gap with part of the river falling in it. A Goomba will fall. After it is defeated, jump over the gap. You will land on a floor with a raised part (or you could say a small hill), a Koopa Troopa and another Goomba. After they are defeated, the player should continue moving. He will come across another Goomba. After it is defeated, the player must jump on a raised part of floor with another gap with, this time, the entire river falling through it at its end. There is a wooden platform above this raised part of floor with a Koopa Troopa, and a Koopa Paratroopa is flying over the gap. After the Koopa Troopa is defeated, either ignore or defeat the Koopa Paratroopa, and jump over the gap. The player will land on a brick floor with a Koopa Paratroopa flying over it, and a ladder at its visible end. After the Koopa Paratroopa is defeated, the player should climb the ladder. The player will be on a wooden platform that is connected to a brick floor. All of this is on a brick building-like structure. At the end of this building's top is a gap with a large leaf and Wind blowing upward. the leaf will fall slowly when the player jumps on it, for it cannot take the player's weight. The wind of this gap is blowing upward which makes the player jump higher and fall slower whenever he is over it. The player should jump on the leaf. The floor will be in view, when the player jumps, however the player must NOT jump to it. Instead, he must jump and fall down the space between the leaf and the floor, or take the falling leaf down to a secret lower part of floor made of bricks. The player should move himself here. The player should jump (by taking the falling leaf) or move right to here (falling) here. A Bomb Block and its blocks are blocking the path. An Orange Cube is right before the blocks. The player should bust open the Cube and collect its collectible. After that has been done, the player should hit the Bomb Block, which is colored in yellow and is on the ceiling. After doing so, it will reveal a brick stairway leading to the floor. The player should jump up the stairway onto the floor. Outside, there should be a wooden platform with a Hammer Bro attached to a vine that is swinging back and forth above the player, and some Goombas walking. If the player fails to fall to the lower part of floor, and lands on the upper floor, he will find two Koopa Troopas on the same floor he is on, in which, is going down a slope. If the player wants to, he can turn around and jump to the lower level. If the player chooses not to, he can defeat the Koopas, and move forward. The floor will end at a wooden platform with a Hammer Bro on it, that is attached to a vine that is swinging side to side (this is the same wooden platform that is above the player if he took the lower route). The player can jump onto it, and then jump onto the cliff the swinging platform takes the player to, or fall down to the lower floor, in which the player who took the lower route and took the stairway is on). He will encounter a Goomba. After it is defeated, the player can defeat the Hammer Bro on the swinging platform. After it is defeated, a Goomba will fall to earth. After it is defeated, the player should climb the wooden ladder. A platform will be on the player's right, but the player should ignore it and climb to the top. At the top, the player will be on the cliff that the swinging platform leads to. To the right of the player is a large gap with a Koopa Paratroopa flying over it, next to the ladder. The player should wait for a swinging platform to swing near him. The player should jump onto the swinging platform, ignoring the Koopa Paratroopa that was flying. Once on the platform, the player must wait for another swinging platform to swing near him. When it gets close, the player can jump, or even walk onto the platform. It will take the player to a small part of floor with a Goomba on it. The player must jump here and attack the Goomba. After the Goomba is defeated, the player should run down a small slope on the part of floor and stop at its edge. The player will be facing a large gap with Wind blowing upwards. A falling leaf is in view. The player should jump onto it, and quickly jump onto a swinging platform. Four Puppits will appear. On the swinging platform, the player should defeat them. After they are defeated, the player should jump onto another falling leaf. Now, he must quickly jump onto a brick floor with a Door. The player should enter the Door. The player will be on a floor split by a small gap with many flowers in the background. When the player moves, he should jump over the gap. Three Bullet Bills will appear. After they are defeated or ignored, the player should run to the end of the floor he is on. He will reach the end with a gap and building-like structure across it in the background. A Koopa Paratroopa is flying over the gap. The player should jump over the gap, and either defeat or ignore the Koopa Paratroopa. He will land on a brick floor with a ladder. The player should climb the ladder. He will be on a wooden platform with a Hammer Bro. To the player's right is a large gap with wind blowind downward. After it is defeated, the player should wait for a moving brick/concrete platform to move near him. When it is close enough, the player should jump onto the platform. It will take the player to a brick floor with a building-like structure, once again, in the background. Actually, there are two floors, but the bottom floor is recommended. A Poppant on the brick floor will run away. It makes no sense to defeat it, for will fall down a gap at the end of the floor. On the brick floor, the player should continue moving. A Bullet Bill will appear. After it is defeated/ignored, the player should climb a ladder on the brick floor. As he climbs, another Bullet Bill will appear. The player should ignore it and climb to the top. At the top, the player will find another ladder on his right. The player should jump to the ladder and climb it. Now, the player must jump to another ladder on his right and climb it. Now, the player must jump to a long ladder on his right and climb it. The floor at the end should come into view. A Poppant will run away from the player. The floor has an upper part and a lower part blocked by a Bomb Block and its blocks. Anyway, the player should jump onto the last ladder (which is a long one) on his right near the floor, and climb it. Now, the player should jump onto the floor. A Bullet Bill will appear. After it is defeated/ignored the player should look for the Poppant. If it is still there, the player should shoot a projectile at it to get rid of it, for it will run if the player is too close. Now the player should run to the end of the floor. A ladder is on the floor, but the player should ignore it. At the end, the player should notice a ladder and other ladders over a gap. However, DON'T JUMP ON THE LADDERS JUST YET! Instead fall down the gap. A Bullet Bill will appear when you fall. Anyway, the player should ignore it and move himself to the left to find the lower part of floor that was blocked by a Bomb Block and its blocks. A Turquoise Cube is here. The player should jump here and bust open the Cube. It should usually give the player a Heart Container. After using it, hit the yellow Bomb Block and jump onto the ladder on your left. Now the player should climb the ladder and jump onto the upper floor, and run to its end. At its end, the player should jump onto a ladder over the gap. Another long ladder is in view. A Koopa Paratroopa is in between the ladder you are on, and the other ladder. The player should jump to the other ladder and wait for a moving brick/concrete platform to move under the ladder. Wind is blowing downwards to the right of you. When the platform gets under your ladder, the player should jump down to the platform. It will take the player to a cliff. During the ride, the player will encounter two Koopa Paratroopas, and can be either defeated or ignored. At the cliff, where the platform stops, is where the player should jump onto. A treadmill-like thing that pushes you forward facing toward the gap that you just got over is here, but DON'T TAKE IT!!! Instead the player should move forward. He will enter a forced battle against Floows, Puppits, Hammer Bros, and Bullet Bills. After all enemies are defeated or destroyed (if a Bullet Bill collides into something it is destroyed), a Stock Ball will appear on a wooden platform above the player, and so will a Bullet Bill that appears and passes under the player. The player should grab the Stock Ball. The screen will begin side-scrolling upwards. The player should jump to a wooden platform moving up and down that us above the Stock Ball's wooden platform (the platform the Stock Ball was on). A red ladder with wooden steps will appear and is moving side to side. A cliff to the right has a Goomba on it. Ignore the cliff and jump onto the ladder. Another cliff will appear on your left that, once again, must be ignored. As the screen moves upward, it will reveal a brick cliff with spikes on its sides (which can make you fall if touched; you also can fall by hitting parts of the cliff). Wait for the ladder to pass the spikes as it moves left and climb. Now, notice that there are spikes on the cliff's floor! A wooden platform will come into view, and so will another red ladder moving side to side. Jump/Fall off the ladder. You will land on the spikes, for there is nothing else to land on. Now, jump onto the wooden platform. A Bullet Bill will appear. After it is defeated/ignored, jump onto the ladder and climb. A cliff with a floor with a Door and spikes before it is on your left. Many Bullet Bills will appear. Jump off the ladder, and enter the Door on the cliff on your left. You will be in a room with three wooden platforms with X's in their middles over a gap that has wind blowing upward. At the end is a Turquoise Cube. Bust it open. It should give you two Maxim Tomatoes. After using these, do not exit out the area yet. Instead go onto the wooden platform bridge and jump. The Wind will push you upwards to a cliff (Note that you cannot jump when the Wind is pushing you upward sticking out of a wall on your left. Sitting on top of it is an Orange Cube. When you are high enough, move to the platform and bust open the Orange Cube. Collect its collectible and fall down back onto the floor or bridge. You will have difficulty falling because you are going against the Wind (the Wind is pushing you upwards and you are going downwards). It is best to fall down at the very edge of the cliff, or fall down the middle and move yourself to the right. You will fall to the Door. Now, exit out this room. Back outside, jump onto the ladder. Avoid the Bullet Bills that are being spawned from the left screen. As the screen moves, climb the ladder. At the top, wait for the screen to reveal what's blocking your path. You will find out that a Bomb Block and its blocks are what's blocking your path. Jump off the ladder and onto a cliff extending out of the wall on your left. Here, jump and hit the yellow Bomb Block. Jump onto the ladder. Now, jump off of it and onto a floor. The screen will begin moving to the side. Jump to a higher part of floor that has a Koopa Troopa on it. After it is defeated, hit the Bomb Block on the higher part of floor. A Hammer Bro will fall just where the Bomb Block and its blocks were. Jump to the higher floor and defeat it. Now, jump onto the last part of floor with a wooden ladder. Climb the ladder to its top. A Door is on your right. A Bullet Bill will appear. After it is defeated/destroyed, two more Bullet Bills will appear, one which homes in on you. After those Bullet Bills are defeated/destroyed, a last one will appear which also homes in on you. After it is defeated/destroyed, enter the Door, for no more will appear. You will enter a battle against Giant False Diddy. Giant False Diddy is extremely strong and a smash attack can instantly defeat you. Giant False Diddy shields and dodges a lot. He moves a lot too and is fast moving. Items will fall to help defeat Giant False Diddy. A Home-Run Bat's side smash will instantly defeat Giant False Diddy, but because of his quick movements, it is difficult to defeat him this way. After Giant False Diddy is defeated, the audience will cheer, and the screen will change. The player will land on a wooden platform with a Minecart to his right, and an orange arrow in midair pointing right. The player should begin moving and jump into the Minecart. The Minecart will move down a hill. A warning sign will appear. The player should press the jump button to get out, for the Minecart will fall off its path, defeat a Koopa Paratroopa, and fall into the water. The player will land in the water near a wooden platform. He should jump onto the wooden platform. A Koopa Paratroopa should near him. After it is defeated, the player should fall down to a wooden platform underwater. However, because the platform is not far from the surface the player will move like normal here. Another Koopa Paratroopa should near the player. After it is defeated, the player should jump onto a wooden platform not underwater with a treadmill-like thing that pushes you forward. Ignore the thing that pushes you forward, and jump onto another platform with another treadmill-like thing that pushes you forward, that is shaped like an inclined plane. If you have no idea what is an inclined plane, then just look for a platform shaped like this: / or \, but just a little more slanted. Anyway, the player should jump off this platform and jump onto a long platform underwater with another thing that pushes you forward. A Koopa Paratroopa will near the player. After it is defeated, the player should continue moving. At the end of the platform, the player should jump onto another inclined plane-shaped platform with another thing that pushes you forward. Now, he should jump to another inclined plane-shaped platform with another thing that pushes you forward. After landing, the player should jump to a platform with a raised part. It has one half of it covered by water, and the other half ,which is the raised part, out of the water. A Koopa Paratroopa is flying to the right of it, and a thing that pushes you forward is on the half covered by water. After the Koopa Paratroopa is defeated, the player should jump to a large platform with two things that push you forward on both ends, and platforms above them. This is the platform the player will land on if he took the things that push you forward. When the player moves forward, he will enter a forced battle against four Hammer Bros. If the player took the things that push you forward, he will automatically enter the battle when he lands. After the Hammer Bros are defeated, the player should move to the end on his right to find a Barrel Cannon above water close to the platform's edge. The player should jump into it. It will automatically shoot the player to another Barrel Cannon. In this Barrel Cannon, the player has the ability to shoot himself. Between this Barrel Cannon and another Barrel Cannon is a platform (it is lower than the Cannons, however) with a Water Jyk to the right of it. A Door to Jigglypuff's battle on Pokemon Stadium 2. will appear above this platform when the level is played again. The player can get here by shooting himself to the Barrel Cannon above the Water Jyk, and then aiming and shooting himself to this platform. Anyway, the player should shoot himself to the Barrel Cannon above the Water Jyk. Inside this Barrel Cannon, the player can shoot himself into another Barrel Cannon. This Barrel Cannon will automatically shoot the player to another Barrel Cannon. Inside this Barrel Cannon, the player can shoot himself. He must shoot himself to another Barrel Cannon, which is below a row of four Water Jyks. If the player shoots himself through the Water Jyks, they will not damage him. Anyway, the next Barrel Cannon will shoot the player automatically to another Barrel Cannon. This Barrel Cannon moves up and down. Also, there are two Barrel Cannons to your right, not one! The player can take either one, for both of them lead to another Barrel Cannon. The upper Barrel Cannon takes the player to a Barrel Cannon facing downward diagonally (like this: \), and the lower Barrel Cannon takes the player to a Barrel Cannon facing upward diagonally (like this: /). If the player takes the lower Barrel Cannon facing upward, he will land in a Barrel Cannon facing downward over a platform underwater with a thing that pushes you forward. The Barrel Cannon will shoot the player to the thing that pushes you forward. Taking the upper Barrel Cannon facing downward takes the player directly to the thing that pushes you forward on the platform underwater. The thing will push the player forward. Before you land in a Barrel Cannon, jump back (or jump off the thing if you are on it) and jump to a platform above the underwater platform with a Turquoise Cube. Bust open the Cube. It should give you two Maxim Tomatoes. After using them, jump into a Barrel Cannon moving side to side that is facing down in an eastern direction (East means right). Now, shoot yourself to another Barrel Cannon. It will shoot you automatically to another Barrel Cannon. In this Barrel Cannon, you can shoot yourself. Notice a Bomb Block over the water, nearly touching it , with its blocks blocking the path. Shoot yourself there. If you succeed, you will hit the Bomb Block revealing a Barrel Cannon. If you fail and land in the water, don't give up. Jump out the water, and hit the Bomb Block wih one of your attacks. Now, jump inside the Barrel Cannob. Inside, notice a Bomb Block, this time, in the air nearly touching the top of the screen with its blocks blocking the path. If you succeed, you will hit the Bomb Block and reveal the path to the Door. If you fail and land in the water, don't get upset. Jump, double jump, and up-special to hit the Bomb Block. Now, jump on the wooden platform and enter the Door. You are transferred to an area with a lot of Springs. Anyway, you will find yourself on a long, wooden platform with two Springs on its right edge. Run to the Springs. On them, Jump and move right. You will land on another platform with Springs. Jump on the Springs to jump over three Koopa Paratroopas flying over water. You will land on another wooden platform with two Springs. A Koopa Paratroopa is between this platform and another platform, and a Bullet Bill will appear. After the Bullet Bill is defeated (you can ignore or defeat the nearby Koopa Paratroopa), jump on the Spring, and move yourself to the right. You will land on an inclined plane-shaped platform with two Springs. Two Bullet Bills will appear: one that can be seen, and one that is so high above you that it cannot be seen unless you jump, double-jump, and up-special or use the Springs. Anyway, jump on the Spring onto another inclined plane-shaped platform, with two Springs. A Koopa Paratroopa is flying between this platform and another platform. Jump onto the Springs, however, do not go to the platform on your right just yet! On your left should be a small platform with an Orange Cube. Jump to the platform and bust the Cube open. Collect its collectible and jump to the platform to the right of the platform with the Springs that helped you get to the Orange Cube's platform. This platform has a Borboras, two Springs on its left edge, and one Spring on its right edge. After the Borboras is defeated, jump onto the Spring on the platform's right edge, for the ones one the platform's left edge will take you back to the Orange Cube's platform. Anyway, after jumping onto the Spring on the platform's right edge, jump to the logs that serve as platforms on your right. They have three Springs next to a spiked floor. Use the Spring closest to the spiked floor to get to a small platform with a Turquoise Cube that is to the left of the logs, but higher. However, a Super Mushroom will strangely and surprisingly fall from the sky. Go back and get the Mushroom for super strength and power! Then, you can show your enemies "I GOT DA POWAH!". The Mushroom falls for no specific purpose. After using the Mushroom, repeat the process and hit the Turquoise Cube. It should give you a Stock Ball (something else on higher difficulties). Jump back onto the log platform and use the first two Springs to jump over the spiked floor. You will land on a wooden platform. Notice a small gap with a Koopa Paratroopa on your right. Fall down this gap, and you will shortly land on a wooden floor with two Springs. Ignore the Springs. Notice your path is blocked by 6 Brick Blocks. Destroy all 6 of them to reveal your path. However, you don't get much, because THE PATH ENDS WHEN YOU START MOVING!!! Notice three falling blocks forming stairs over water. Jump on the first one (the highest falling block). When it falls and lands in the swamp, jump to a wooden platform with a Door and four Springs on its edges. Enter the Door. You will be on a floor next to a pool of water in a large room ( the camera views you as if you were playing on a stage such as Green Greens). First notice that the path inside the water is made by a Bomb Block and its blocks underwater with a few sticking out of the water. However, DON'T HIT IT! Instead, jump into the water, (you will land normally like when you do a jump and walk the same on these blocks) and jump to a platform with a Turquoise Cube. Bust open the Turquoise Cube. It should give you two Stickers or a Trophy. Now, on your left, jump on some of the Bomb Block's blocks that were sticking out of the water. On top of them, run to the other side opposite the side you jumped, and fall off the blocks. You will find a Heart Container. After using it, go directly to where the Bomb Block itself is located. Right there, hit the Bomb Block with a down special move, down smash attack, or down strong attack. It will break and reveal an Orange Cube. Bust open the Cube and collect its collectible. Now exit the room. You see, if you hit the Bomb Block before using the Heart Container, you will never be able to use it, for it will fall into the swamp water no matter how many times you enter the room. Outside, jump on a Spring and then jump onto a thin wooden platform moving up and down. Now, jump over a group of short logs with spiked, damaging (they can damage you and KO your enemies) exactly like the ones from The Ruined Zoo. A Feyesh will follow you. Ignore the Feyesh. The player on one of four Springs on a wooden platform that serve as platforms. If the player lands on the ones on the right, he will go back to the falling block stairway. If that happens, the player should jump onto the falling blocks and jump here again. However, if the player lands on the Springs on the left, he will be launched over a group of short logs with spiked tops on the player's right. Another Feyesh will "swim" towards the player.The player will land on a wooden platform with a Borboras and a Boom Primid, which is the only species of Primid in the level. After all the enemies are defeated, the player should follow these steps carefully. He must jump onto a small inclined plane-shaped platform with two Springs that cover it. The player will be launched and must move right to land on a platform with three Springs that cover it. After landing on a Spring there, the player must himself to a bent platform with four Springs: two on its left edge which send the player back to the wooden platform with two Springs, and two ones on its right edge. The player should jump to any of the two springs on the right and move himself over an EXTREMELY TALL group of spiked top logs. On the other side, the player will land on a wooden platform with nothing but a Door. The player should enter the Door. He will find himself on a long wooden platform. An orange arrow is pointing right. The player should move forward and jump onto a large wooden platform that has red coloring on its front. The platform will begin moving. Two Bullet Bills and a giant spiked plant will appear out of the water (The Bullet Bills appear in the air, not the water!) and sink back in. Three more Bullet Bills will appear after those two Bullet Bills are destroyed, defeated, or ignored. Those spiked plants are dangerous, but there is a way to tell if one is coming out of the water. There will be ripples in the water. If you see such, move away or will damaged 10% by that! Two more plants will come out of the water. After that, the screen will move (it was side-scrolling, although it never looked like it was) to a wooden platform underwater with small Brick Blocks above it, and a smaller wooden platform above the bricks. The player will enter a forced battle against Red Koopa Paratroopas, Goombas and Bullet Bills. Most of the Bullet Bills that appear during the forced battle home in on the player. After all the enemies are defeated, a Bullet Bill will home in on the player. After it is defeated, the player should jump on a long wooden platform over water, who's end is not seen. This platform has many Goombas on it. He should notice two crossed spikes in the water. The spikes will suddenly go down and disappear. This is a plant attack so move away. One plant will appear out of the water and another one will break a part of the wooden platform. Many Goombas will appear on this platform. After that plant does so, two more on different sides will break part of the wooden platform and the plant in the middle will break the remaining wooden platform. Before it does so, jump to the other wooden platform and defeat the Goomba there. Two more plants will break part of the wooden platform and one in the middle will do so after those two. Now, jump onto a platform, it will begin moving northeast. More plants will emerge out of the water. The platform will stop at a wooden floor. If the plants made you fall into the water before you reached this platform, you won't die. Instead swim to a platform just like the one that would've taken you to the wooden floor. This one is moving up and down. The platform will take you to the one that would've taken you to the wooden floor. There's the Goal Door! BUT! A Giant Goomba will fall after you jump on this wooden floor. After it is defeated, enter the Door to claim victory.
