Vine Valley is the twenty-ninth level in Donkey Kong Country Returns, as well as the first level of the Forest (Donkey Kong Country Returns). This level takes place in a large forest with many vines, long and short. The Kongs (Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong) must use these vines to their advantage by using them to swing over large gaps and collect special items, such as Banana Coins. As the apes swing through the forest, they must watch out for a large number of red and yellow Chomps, which try to attack the Kongs. Because of these enemies, the Kongs might have to sometimes carefully swing past them. Also, some vines tend to be the tongue of a sub-species of Chomps known as Vine Chomps, which can eat the apes if they hang on their "tongue" too long. Enemies in this level, other than red and yellow Chomps and Vine Chomps are Buzzbites, Tiki Goons, Tiki Zings Tiki Dooms, and Tiki Buzzes. In Time Attack mode, a time of 1:44:00 is needed to get a gold medal, a time of 2:02:00 for a silver medal, and a time of 2:15:00 for a bronze medal.
OverviewThe level begins with the apes landing on a straight floor in a cave full of clear, shiny crystals in the background and closer in the foreground. The apes can head backwards, to make a large group of crystals move, revealing a room with a Puzzle Piece the apes can jump to. Anyway, after the apes run forward from their landing spot, they can jump onto a large springy mushroom that they can bounce on. The apes can bounce on this mushroom, and move themselves onto another large springy mushroom. Here, the apes can then bounce themselves onto a third springy mushroom, which can then bounce them into a Barrel Cannon. The Barrel Cannon then fires them to another Barrel Cannon. The Kongs seem to be inside a tree here. Anyway, there is a Tiki Zing that moves left to right here and another Barrel Cannon above the Tiki Zing. When the Tiki Zing is not in the Kong's shooting area, the apes should shoot into the next Barrel Cannon. Here, the apes must shoot past two Tiki Zings that move left to right but in different directions (one moves left and one moves right at each move). There is a third Barrel Cannon above these two enemies. When these enemies are not in the apes' way, the Kongs should shoot to this Barrel Cannon. Here, there is a line of three Tiki Zings that move left to right and in the same direction with each move. There is a Barrel Cannon above this "tall" group of Tiki Zings. When the enemies are not in the Kong's firing path, the apes should fire to the next Barrel Cannon. Here, there are three Tiki Zings that move left to right: two moving the same direction and one the opposite direction. Here, there is another Barrel Cannon above the enemies. When the Tiki Zings are not in the Kong's way, even though this time it may be a little tricky, the Kongs should fire to the next Barrel Cannon. This is just like the previous, however it is made with Banana Coins instead of Tiki Zings. However, instead of avoiding them, you'd want to this time, collect all three, so before they all pass the Barrel Cannon's firing path, the apes should fire through them, hopefully getting all of them. They will land in another Barrel Cannon, which then can fire the apes through a long line of Bananas and onto the top of a floor. Here, directly in front of the Kongs is a strange plant (the ones from the Jungle (Donkey Kong Country Returns)) that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. As the Kongs head forward, they can find a small gap with a red Chomp in it. Above the Chomp is a Banana Bunch. When the Kongs jump over this small jump (they must be careful for red Chomps make a jumping attack every three chomp attacks, and yellow Chomps every four chomps), they will land on a floor with another strange plant, which is quite large and can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. The floor also has a fungi platform above it, which holds a DK Barrel. Next to the strange plant is a small gap with another red Chomp in it. Above the Chomp is a Banana Bunch, and higher above that is a Banana Coin, which can be reached with a jump off the fungi platform. Ahead of the red Chomp is a very small platform that has another gap with a red Chomp next to it. The Kongs can jump here. There is also a Banana Bunch above the Chomp. From here, the apes can jump onto a floor with a small strange plant that can be pounded on for a prize, most likely, and three propeller-like plants (also from the Jungle (Donkey Kong Country Returns)) that can be blown on for a collectible or collectibles. There is a lower floor ahead of this floor, directly after the third propeller-like plant. Here, the apes have two choices (we're on the lower floor, not the above floor). They can grab onto a nearby vine that swings back and forth or drop down to a lower floor. If the apes drop down to the lower floor, they will encounter a Tiki Goon and find a large strange plant that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. The floor is split in half by a gap with a red Chomp in it. Carefully, the apes can then jump over this gap to land on the other side. Here, there is another Tiki Goon, another vine swinging back and forth above the floor (and the apes if you are on this floor), and a small strange plant that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. If the apes continue to head forward, they can enter a Bonus Room. If the Kongs ignore the lower floor and grab onto the vine, they can collect five Bananas if they hold on at the vine's lowest point. Another vine will approach the apes that they can jump onto. The primates can then jump onto the other vine (note: this is the vine above the other side of the lower floor). If the apes hold onto the vine at its lowest point, they can grab seven Bananas in a curved row, much like the previous. The vine can take the apes to a floor with three strange plants (two small, one large) next to the Tutorial Pig hosting the checkpoint. The strange plants can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. From the checkpoint, the apes can drop down to a lower floor that has two propeller-like plants that can be blown on for a prize, most likely. There is a gap directly after these plants, however, a long vine also swings back and forth here. When it passes by the apes, they can jump onto the vine. A Tiki Buzz flies back and forth above the vine. There is also a curved trail of eight Bananas that can be collected if the primates hold on to the vine at its lowest point, and there is also a higher, much small vine at the end of the vine's swinging path that can be reached if the apes climb up the vine they're on and jump to it. From this vine, they can jump into an Extra Life Balloon and cling onto the next vine. Or if they don't want to do this, the Kongs can jump to the next vine from the first vien after the checkpoint when it gets close. On this vine, there is a curved trail of ten Bananas which can be reached if the apes are at the vine's lowest point, as well as two Bananas and a Banana Coin together much higher above this first trail. Also, above this group of two Bananas with a Banana Coin in the middle is a Tiki Buzz, as well one not too far below the vine. Another vine nears the heroes, which they can jump onto. Here, the apes can find another high group of two Bananas with a Banana Coin in the middle, as well as another vine. However, this vine isn't nearing the Kongs at this moment, IT'S GOING THE SAME DIRECTION AS THE APES!!! So, with that being said, the Kongs have to wait for this much longer vine to swing near them so that they can jump to it. On this vine, it can swing them through a trail of Bananas to a platform attached to a higher floor. The platform holds a DK Barrel. When the apes jump here, they can collect the letter K of the K-O-N-G Letters just before they land (they also jump over a yellow Chomp before landing here just so you know). Here, the apes can jump onto the higher floor where a Tiki Goon walks about. There is a small tree stump in the Kong's way right here, however, it can be jumped over. Above the stump is a Banana and a Banana Bunch. On the other side of the stump, the Kongs can find a Tiki Goon, a Tiki Doom, a large and small stange plant, both of which can be pounded on for a prize, most likely, and a propeller-like plant at the end of the floor, which can be blown on for a prize, most likely. There is a HUGE gap directly after this propeller-like plant, however, a long vine swings back and forth in it. When it nears the duo, the Kongs can jump onto it. If they stay on its lowest point, the apes can collect a long trail of Bananas which takes them to a floor. Here, the apes can find a Barrel and a strange, pumpkin-like object on a stand that seems to have what looks like a bottle rocket in it. When this object is pounded on, the bottle rocket-like object shoots out of the pumpkin-like object and releases a collectible. Directly after this floor is a lower floor with two Tiki Goons and a small strange plant that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. Also, a vine swings by the apes that tends to have a strange, bush-like area that some of it seems to be into. The vine is above the lower floor and can take the apes to a wooden floor that can be seen from here. When the vine is grabbed, the bush-like area goes away to show a Vine Chomp. The Vine Chomp slowly eats the vine, trying to get the apes. Quickly, the apes should jump onto the wooden floor. Here, there is a Tiki Goon and a large strange plant that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. The apes can then drop to a small platform attached to the floor with a Tiki Goon and a small strange plant that can be pounded on for a prize, most likely. There is a gap ahead of this platform, however, a large oval-shaped object covered in green, grassy turf and Bananas with a Banana Coin at the bottom is above it. Two Buzzbites rapidly run about the object's grassy turf. From here, the apes can jump and cling onto this oval-shaped object's grassy turf. On the other side of this oval-shaped object, is a Vine Chomp with it's vine tongue sticking out. Before they can get hurt by the fast-moving Buzzbites, the apes should grab onto the Vine Chomp's vine tongue. Here, there is another oval-shaped object with two Buzzbites on it, grassy turf, Bananas, and a Banana Coin at the bottom, just like the previous. Before they get eaten, the apes should jump and cling onto this object's grassy turf. Like with the previous, the apes can find another Vine Chomp with its vine tongue sticking out next to another oval-shaped object that is slightly different from the previous two. The heroes can then cling onto the enemy's vine tongue and then jump and cling onto the next oval-shaped object's grassy turf. This object, as mentioned before, is slightly different than the previous two other oval-shaped objects because it has no Banana Coin at the bottom (it is replaced with a Banana) and the letter O is at the top of the object's turf. However, the two Buzzbites are still there. From here, the apes can find a small floor with the Tutorial Pig hosting the checkpoint. The Kongs can go to the other side of the object and jump here. After the checkpoint, it doesn't take long for the apes to come up to a large gap after the floor, however a vine is swinging back and forth in the gap. When it nears the Kongs, they can grab onto the vine. If the Kongs swing at the vine's lowest point, they can collect a trail of Bananas. Soon, another vine nears the apes which they can jump to. When the apes jump to this vine, they'll pass a Tiki Buzz in the air, but it can't hurt the Kongs. On the next vine, the apes will pass another Tiki Buzz below them and they can grab the trail of Bananas if they are at the vine's lowest point. If the apes have collected all Bananas in this trail and the previous trail (each of which can be collected by being at the lowest point of both vines), a Puzzle Piece appears, however, the apes must not jump to the next vine, instead, let the vine go back and take them to the Puzzle Piece in the air. However, the apes can now jump to the next vine, This vine is very short, and because of that, it has a short swing path. If the apes stay at the bottom of the vine, they can collect a trail of only five Bananas before they must jump over a yellow Chomp to another small vine. However, the letter N is between these two vines, so the apes should move themselves a little higher and jump to collect it. Anyway, on the other (next) vine, there is only a two Bananas and a Banana Coin that the heroes can collect before they jump over another yellow Chomp to another small vine. Almost exactly like the previous, there is only three collectibles for the Kongs to collect before they jump. However, the Kongs are collecting three Bananas and they are jumping to a floor instead of another vine. Here, the apes can find two Tiki Goons, a DK Barrel, and some propeller-like plants at the floor's left edge that can be blown on for a prize, most likely. At the end of this floor, the apes will find a large gap, where they can find a Vine Chomp sticking out its vine tongue. The apes have reached a deadly area that has five Vine Chomps next to each other over a gap. The Kongs must go through this area carefully by jumping as soon or shortly after they jump on each Vine Chomp's tongue. If done at the right angle, the apes can collect Banana Bunches and the letter G before they jump to a floor. The apes will also pass some flying Tiki Buzzes on the way. On this large floor, the apes can find a Barrel, three Tiki Goons on the floor as well as two more Tiki Goons coming from a higher part of floor. The Barrel can be used to defeat all Tiki Goons. There is also a small strange plant on this floor that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. On the higher part of floor, a large and small strange plant can be found that can be pounded on for a collectible, most likely. At the end of this floor, is a large gap with a long vine swinging back and forth in it. When it nears the apes, the Kongs can jump onto it. If at the vine's lowest point, the apes can collect a long trail of Bananas and Banana Bunches before they jump to another long vine. Here, the apes can swing to small platform with three propeller-like plants that can be blown on for a prize, most likely. If at the lowest point of the vine, the apes can collect another long trail of Bananas ending with a special Banana Bunch before they jump to the platform. Here, on this floor, the apes can jump to a higher platform with the Slot Machine Barrel above it. When the Slot Machine Barrel is hit, the level is complete.
- K: Right before the second DK Barrel, the letter K can be found at the end of a vine section.
- O: On the third oval-shaped object just before the second checkpoint is the letter O.
- N: The letter N is right after the sixth Puzzle Piece between two vines.
- G: In the area with the five Vine Chomps near the end of the level, the letter G can be found between the last two Vine Chomps' vine tongues.
- The Kongs should head left from where they land at the very beginning of the level to cause some crystals to move and reveal a room with the Puzzle Piece.
- When the Kongs reach the first two vines of the level, they should drop to the lower floor and continue over a small gap with a Chomp in it to enter a Bonus Room at the end of the floor. There, the apes must shoot through four Barrel Cannons to collect sixty-five Bananas, three Banana Coins, and an Extra Life Balloon. Once everything is collected within thirty seconds, a Puzzle Piece.
- Just after the letter K, the Kongs should head to the edge of the platform and jump behind a bush in the abyss. They should land into a Barrel Cannon that shoots them to the Puzzle Piece.
- Before the primates reach the area with the letter O and the oval-shaped objects covered in grassy turf, they should find a small plant next to a Vine Chomp's vine tongue that they can break open to reveal a Puzzle Piece.
- Immediately after the fourth Puzzle Piece, the Kongs can see part of a vine hanging from a bush at the top of the screen. To reach it, they must jump on the nearby platform covered in climable grassy turf and roll jump off of the top. When they grab onto the vines, they should climb up screen. To reach it, they must jump on the nearby platform covered in climable grassy turf and roll jump off of the top. When the apes grab onto the vines, they should climb up to access a Bonus Room, where they must move along two moving platforms to grab forty-seven Bananas, an Extra Life Balloon, and two Banana Coins. If everything is collected within thirty seconds, a Puzzle Piece appears.
- While the primates swing on the first two vines after the checkpoint, they should make sure they grab every Banana below them to reveal a Puzzle Piece they can collect by climbing up the second vine.
- On the platform immediately before the Slot Machine Barrel is a trio of plants. The heroes should blow on them to reveal three Bananas. If they are all collected, a Puzzle Piece appears.
